Southeast Missouri State University last week announced its lineup for the visual arts 2015-2016 season at the River Campus.

The gallery will showcase six exhibits during the 2015-2016 season, along with eight bachelor of fine arts graduating seniors exhibitions. All exhibitions and receptions will take place in the Art Gallery, unless otherwise noted. The Art Gallery, in the Seminary Building, room 106, is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and on First Fridays from 1 to 7 p.m. All art exhibitions are free and open to the public.

The season will open with Coded Vernaculars on display from Sept. 8 through 24. The first Artist Talk, with Sean Hottois, will be from noon to 1 p.m. Sept. 2 in the John and Betty Glenn Convocation Center. The second artist talk, featuring Todd Reed, is from 4 to 5 p.m. Sept. 4 in the Art Gallery with a reception to follow from 5 to 7 p.m. This exhibition brings together two artists whose artwork breaks traditional boundaries. Reed is interested in optical phenomena with the potential to confuse the viewer visually, and Hottois employs typography, 2-D design, light, motion, sound, code, sensors and 3-D printed objects to create interactive experiences.

Alumni Exhibition will open Oct. 5, with art department alumni exhibiting their current work in a broad range of media, with a reception scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 2. The exhibit will remain on display until Oct. 22.

The Notable Quotable Exhibition will open Nov. 2 and remain on display until Nov. 12, with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 6. This juried exhibition, organized by the Southeast AIGA student group, brings together work by graphic design and illustration students from across the region with the goal of artistically communicating a famous quote.

Bachelor of Fine Arts Graduating Seniors Exhibitions for student artists graduating at the close of the fall 2015 semester will be held throughout December. Exhibition dates are:

  • Part 1: Nov. 16 to 20; reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 20
  • Part II: Nov. 30 to Dec. 4; reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 4
  • Part III: Dec. 7 to 11; reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 11
  • Part IV: Dec. 14 to 18; reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 18

The Art Educators' Exhibition will open Feb. 7, with receptions from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 5 and from noon to 2 p.m. Feb. 7. Carol Horst, Department of Art instructor, will host the exhibition for high-school art teachers in the region to coincide with the annual high school art exhibition in the Crisp Museum. The exhibit will remain on display until Feb. 25.

Ron Fondaw: Shaky Ground will be on display from March 7 to 22, with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. March 4 in the Art Gallery. A juror lecture will take place from noon to 1 p.m. March 23 in the Glenn Convocation Center. Fondaw, professional artist and professor of sculpture at Washington University in St. Louis, will exhibit mixed-media artwork dealing with memory and time.

Running concurrently with the annual Juried Student Exhibition displayed in the Crisp Museum, Salon des Refuses will feature additional work created by Southeast art students. It will open with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. April 1 and remain on display until April 14.

Bachelor of Fine Arts Graduation Seniors Exhibitions for students graduating at the close of the spring 2016 semester will be held throughout April and May. Spring Bachelor of Fine Arts Graduating Seniors Exhibitions are:

  • Part 1: April 18 to 22; reception from 5 to 7 p.m. April 22
  • Part II: April 25 to 29; reception from 5 to 7 p.m. April 29
  • Part III: May 2 to 6; reception from 5 to 7 p.m. May 6
  • Part IV: May 9 to 13; reception from 5 to 7 p.m. May 13

Crisp Museum

The Crisp Museum will host five exhibitions during the 2015-2016 River Campus season. Museum hours during the academic year are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 1 to 4 p.m. on weekends. First Friday hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The museum operates on a reduced schedule during the summer. Museum exhibitions are free and open to the public.

A Song from the Field opens Sept. 4 with a reception from 4 to 8 p.m. An Artist Talk is scheduled at 6 p.m. Sept. 3. The exhibition is a product of a journey taken through the Mississippi River Delta, physically and spiritually, by William Burton Jr. and Robert A. Ketchens, to rediscover the blues. The exhibit will remain on display through Oct. 25.

Thomas Hart Benton's American Mythologies, from the collection of the State Historical Society of Missouri, begins with a curator talk at 6 p.m. Nov. 5. There will be a reception from 4 to 8 p.m. Nov. 6. It will remain on display until Jan. 24. From cowboys to steam trains, Jesse James and Huck Finn, the subjects of these artworks explore the energy, anxiety and conflicted nature of America's conception of itself. The exhibition is organized by The State Historical Society of Missouri with support of its Research Center-Cape Girardeau. Artworks are on loan from the SHSMO Art Collection, Columbia, Missouri.

The 38th annual high-school art exhibit, Exhibiting Excellence, will open Feb. 7, with a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. The exhibit will showcase the artistic talents of high-school juniors and seniors from Southeast Missouri and Illinois. The exhibit will run through March 13.

The annual Juried Student Exhibition will open April 1, with a reception from 4 to 8 p.m. The exhibit showcases the creative talents of the Southeast Department of Art students. It will remain on display until April 24.

Daven Anderson's The Rivers: A Celebration of Life and Work on our Inland Waterways will begin with an artist talk at 6 p.m. May 5 and open May 6 with a reception from 4 to 8 p.m. The exhibit of paintings portrays the diversity of life living on or near rivers and bays, as well as the industry that depends on navigable waters. Depicted are waterway users and inhabitants, shipping and barging scenes, urban and industrial landscapes and waterway wildlife. It will be on display until June 19.

Family days

The Crisp Museum will offer two family days at the museum on Nov. 14 and Feb. 13.

Thomas Hart Benton Family Day will feature presentations and art activities introducing Benton's artistic style. The day's events are scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 14.

Civil War Times will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 13. Participants will learn about local historic events and family life during Civil War times, with music, food, period clothing, firearms displays, activities and presentations.

Transition Spaces

The museum also will offer its Transition Spaces Series in 2015-2016. The exhibition space is devoted to the works of artists within 150 miles of Cape Girardeau. Exhibits in this series are:

One-day events

The museum will offer one-day events as well. They are as follows:

At Women's Day of Art, easy techniques are taught, discussed and created in short sessions, including printmaking, painting, cards, collage and a gallery tour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 15. No experience necessary. Supplies are provided. Register by Sept. 1.

A Dance Performance is inspired by artworks in the exhibition A Song from the Field. Southeast dance students will perform a choreography of solo and duet dances exploring the rhythm and timbre of blues music and its narrative possibilities. It will be performed at 7 p.m. Oct. 9.

Missouri in the Time of Thomas Hart Benton, presented at 6 p.m. Nov. 19, will feature historian Frank Nickell discussing Missouri in the time of Thomas Hart Benton, 1889-1975.
