ST. LOUIS -- Powell Symphony Hall is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Built in 1925 as the St. Louis Theatre, the venue originally presented vaudeville acts as well as motion pictures. "The Sound of Music" was the last movie shown in the theater.
The foyer was modeled after the royal chapel at Versailles. The stained-glass window on the facade includes an image of Saint Louis IX, the king of France, on horseback.
The Saint Louis Symphony Society bought the theater in 1966 and after an extensive renovation opened it in 1968 at Powell Symphony Hall. The hall is named for shoe manufacturer Walter S. Powell, whose widow created a charitable trust that benefits the endowment of the concert hall.
