June is known for summer blockbusters

The summer movie season is here again, and June releases look to be what we've all come to expect from summer films: lots of superheroes, comedies, remakes, sequels and big budgets. Here's my small rundown of what's in store for moviegoers this month.

‘Rock of Ages' (today)

A bevy of stars such as Alec Baldwin, Russel Brand, Julianne Hough and others perform in this movie adaptation of the rock musical. It also features a combo I thought I'd never see: '80s rock and hair metal performed by Tom Cruise.

‘Safe Haven' (today)

This one's going to make some people cry. It's based on a book by Nicholas Sparks, who also wrote tearjerkers like "The Notebook" and "Dear John." Heck, I'm tearing up already.

‘Snow White and the Huntsman' (today)

For some reason, the Snow White story has become popular lately. Add this movie to "Mirror, Mirror" and ABC's "Once Upon a Time" as the latest Snow White remakes. But this is a darker, more adventurous look at the classic fairy tale and stars Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron.

‘Madagascar 3' (June 8)

The vocal talents of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock and Jada Pinkett Smith return for another animated tale of zoo animals left to run amok. No spoilers, but this time they head to Europe.

‘Prometheus' (June 8)

There are some film critics who say this will be director Ridley Scott's return trip to the "Alien" series. But Scott himself describes it as a much different kind of space thriller. We shall see.

‘That's My Boy' (June 15)

The teen in me that still thinks Adam Sandler is funny wants to see this story about a guy who becomes a father at 12 years old. Eventually, his grown son (played by Saturday Night Live's Andy Samberg) tries to have a relationship with his irresponsible dad, and Sandler-style chaos ensues.

‘Jack the Giant Killer' (June 15)

Another example of a fairy tale turned edgy, this one's based on the children's story of a plucky lad who slays giants during King Arthur's reign.

‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter' (June 22)

The Seth Grahame-Smith's novel this is based off is said to have worked vampires smoothly into Lincoln's actual biography. Hopefully, the movie version does the same. Admittedly, the title just makes me want to laugh every time I hear it.

‘Brave' (June 22)

This is a Pixar reworking of Mel Gibson's "Braveheart," and possibly its first movie focusing on a female lead. Past Pixar classics like "Toy Story," "Cars" and "Monsters, Inc" are all dominated by male characters. "Brave" takes a different direction.

‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation' (June 29)

This is the follow-up to the live-action "G.I. Joe" movie based on the action figures and former cartoon series, and stars Channing Tatum, Bruce Willis and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Goooooo Joe!
