Ever Eat Here? We Did...
By Misty Smith
Even though I'm too young to enjoy the wine, I was still drawn to the romantic little restaurant on Main Street, downtown. I had no idea what the menu or the prices were going to be. My friend and I decided to go after work one night to see if it was as good as we had heard.
In the Wine Cellar has a very different atmosphere from the businesses that surround it. It is set apart by a miniature outdoor cafe, hanging flowers and just the right mixture of casual and fancy. The front is lined with tall windows and plants.
When you walk in, the setting is a little darker and very intimate. You can see all the way to the "cellar" in the back from the front door. The wall is lined with all sorts of wines and liquors. You can sit at little romantic tables or at a sort of bistro table and stools. There are candles in unique holders and flowers on the tables. The decor makes you think of gourmet food. Grapevine wreaths and books featuring cigars give it a comfortable, sophisticated feel.
We were promptly welcomed by one of the waiters as we were deciding which table to choose. I really liked the waiters' attire, black and white, traditional and super clean; I really felt like we were at a fancy restaurant.
The menu came next, which had a separate lunch and supper menu. You can order the more modestly priced lasagna or for a special occasion, the more elaborate veal dishes. I can't really put a label on what type of food is on the menu, there is really something for all tastes. I personally ordered battered chicken breast on a bed of seasoned rice, while my friend went for the Bourbon Street steak platter, which came with whipped potatoes and corn.
While we waited for our meals, I decided to check out the wine cellar. There were lots of domestic and imported liquors, your regular beers, and of course lots of wine. I kind of wanted a tour, but they were having a banquet upstairs at the time we were there, so I thought that the help might be a little busy. I'll just have to wait until next time (or until I'm 21, so I can find out for myself).
When our food arrived, we were very anxious and curious to experience the meals that we've heard so much about. The chicken was cooked with just the right amount of crispy batter, but I was wishing I had ordered the steak. The waiter also brought a complimentary basket of bread sticks with what tasted like Italian seasoning and butter. The food was fresh and it was very filling, so I decided to get my leftovers to go.
It was really a relaxing place to wind down with a friend. I would eat here with someone you want to spend romantic time with, or for a special occasion. It was a little pricey, $15 for the chicken platter and water, $20-something for the steak platter and water, but it's good to spoil yourself every once in a while with a "fancy restaurant" atmosphere.
