"Monster" grips you the moment it begins and does not let go even after you leave the theater. Based on the true story of Aileen Wuornos (Charlize Theron), America's first female serial killer, this film is disturbing and haunting and begs the question should this kind of movie be made even if it is a true story? The movie has a graphic rape scene, disturbing murders made even more disturbing based on the fact they are gratuitous, including the execution-style murder of an "innocent" elderly person begging for his life.
While giving consideration to the violence, the acting especially (Theron) is convincing and intense. The cinematography is also true to the period (1989-90) and circumstances. The acting and camera work create an intense portrait of a disturbing person and situation. This movie should be viewed with caution and is not for those with a weak stomach.

Aileen Wuornos (Charlize Theron) dreamed of someday being rich and beautiful, but most of all, being loved. Her quest for love leads her down the path of prostitution, which becomes a way of life for her.
Eventually Aileen finds both love and acceptance in the arms of a young woman, Selby Wall (Christina Ricci). The movie takes a bizarre twist when Aileen discovers what extreme measures she will take to protect the love she's finally found.
Although I was a little hesitant to watch this film because of the dark side of reality it portrayed, the fact that it was based on a true story gave it redeeming qualities. I thought the movie was well written and that Charlize Theron was very convincing in her role. I would recommend it for a mature audience who will appreciate its examination of the critical choices that people make and the consequences that follow.

One star (out of 4)
If you're looking for a heart-warming movie for the family, "Monster" is not for you. Charlize Theron portrays a prostitute turned serial killer with an unfortunate past that has shaped the woman she has become. With an effort to reform her life, Theron looks to other forms of income to support her new lover, played by Christina Ricci. Going without luck or experience on her side, Theron is forced back into prostitution. Since Theron has men to blame for her abusive childhood, she feels this justifies the morally sadistic murdering spree that she soon enters into. This emotionally stressful movie left me feeling more aware of the reality of prostitution and a little bit nauseous. The violence, harsh language, and sexual promiscuity of the film was a little over the edge. This film is definitely not for younger audiences. Personally, I in no way benefited from watching this movie and I do not intend on seeing it again. Besides Charlize Theron's excellent performance, I cannot think of any reason to recommend this movie.
