This past weekend, I took a day trip to one of the most interesting places in our immediate area- River Ridge Winery in Commerce, Missouri. This trip marked my fourth visit to the winery in the last couple of years. I have come to associate the trip to Commerce, with warm weather and the life that spring has to offer.
Named for its unique location, River Ridge Winery is positioned at the intersection of Crowley's Ridge and the Mississippi River. Residing in a rustic farm house, the winery offers Midwestern visitors an authentic vineyard experience.
The fertile hills behind the winery are home to countless rows of French Hybrid grapes. Nurtured and hand-tended, the grapes are harvested and carefully processed into a wide variety of high-quality dry and semi-dry table wines.
When you walk through the winery's front door, you will enter a small shop, with a large selection of items. Featuring everything from gourmet food and wine accessories to candles and t-shirts, the shop seems to have something for everyone.
As you make your way through the mix of items, you will most likely be greeted by owner and wine maker, Jerry Smith. After an informal introduction, he will invite you to the bar to taste the medley of wines River Ridge has to offer. Bottle by bottle, Jerry will tell the story of each wine; the grapes that were used to make it and the time it needed to age. These brief introductions provide appreciation and anticipation for each and every upcoming taste.
After the tasting, you are free to purchase a wine basket and picnic throughout the vineyard or by the river. A courtyard with tables is also adjacent to the winery; providing groups an outdoor forum for a sun-filled conversation. If you're not a drinker, the winery offers French-style lemonade and bottled water to quench your thirst.
Although River Ridge is not an enormous winery, it offers something you won't find at many vineyards- a healthy dose of southern hospitality. Both Jerry Smith, and his wife Joannie, treat visitors like members of the family and repeatedly extend their gratitude.
Whether you're a wine enthusiast or a novice, River Ridge Winery offers a day filled with beautiful scenery and delicious wine. For couples, the winery provides an afternoon getaway complete with a quiet walk and a romantic picnic.
The trip to Commerce is short and well worth the drive. If you haven't been to River Ridge Winery, consider making the trip this summer. They are open everyday from noon to 6 PM.
