Buckner Brewing Co. is known for its burgers and beer, but tonight the owners will unveil a new experiment that will throw art into the mix.

The Riverview Room, a new banquet hall on the restaurant's third floor, will play host to an exhibit of two- and three-dimensional art by about 12 local artists. The show will be the unveiling of the new room, which will be available for rent for special functions.

As Riverview's name implies, the room features a clear view of the Mississippi River in downtown Cape Girardeau. The view makes for a nice backdrop for an art show, which the room might be used for in the future if tonight's show goes well.

Tammy Maddock with Buckner said the restaurant hopes to hold shows in the Riverview on the first Friday of each month when no other events are booked.

This week's show is free and open to the public, beginning at 6 p.m. and continuing until about 11 p.m., said Maddock. Part of the reason for having the later hours is to accommodate patrons who want to see other art shows, as well.

"People can come here and mingle after the shows," said Maddock.

Artist Craig Thomas helped organize the exhibit with Jake Wells. Thomas said the art comes from a variety of artists, from new college graduates to retired art professors, and showcases a variety of styles, from abstract to realism.

The show was thrown together at the last minute, said Thomas, which adds to the excitement of trying out the new venue.

"There's something to be said about winging it and going to a space you've never been in," said Thomas.

Pieces exhibited will be eclectic, following no set themes.

Thomas said the prospect of having another art venue in Cape Girardeau is always an exciting thing.
