Plein Air Competition set for Oliver House

The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri and the Jackson Heritage Association will host a Plein Air Competition at the historic Oliver House in Jackson from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 28. Participating artists are invited to use an aspect of the Oliver House as the backdrop for their piece. At the end of the event, a committee from the Jackson Heritage Association will select the first-, second- and third-place pieces. With the artist's permission, the first-place artwork will be purchased by the society for an award of $150. Amateurs and experts are invited. A plein-air event is a gathering of artists who paint scenes on location in the open air as the Impressionists painted more than 100 years ago. Canadian artist to present workshop

PADUCAH, Ky. -- Canadian master painter Johannes Vloothuis will teach a painting workshop Oct. 25 to 27 at The National Quilt Museum in Paducah. The workshop is open to artists of all skill levels and paint media, including watercolor, oil, pastel and acrylic. Class registration deadline is Oct. 1, and the cost is $290.

River City Players presents a comedy

The River City Players, Cape Girardeau's community theater group, will present the Don Rauch comedy "Nuts, Bolts and Carnations" in November at the Port Cape Girardeau restaurant. The play will be performed Nov. 7, with a dessert bar at 6:30 p.m. and the show starting at 7 p.m.; Nov. 8 and 9, with a dinner buffet at 7 p.m. and the show starting at 8 p.m. and Nov. 10, with a dessert bar starting at 1:30 p.m. and the show at 2 p.m. Cost of the dessert bar presentations are $20; the cost of the dinner buffet showings are $35. 'Legally Blonde' set at River Campus

Nominated for seven Tony Awards, the musical comedy "Legally Blonde" will be presented by the Department of Theatre and Dance at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 2 to 5 and 2 p.m. Oct. 6 in the Bedell Performance Hall. "Legally Blonde's" music and lyrics are by Nell Benjamin and Laurence O'Keefe, and the book is by Heather Hach. The show includes mild language. Kevin Hampton, professor of music and new chairman of the Department of Music at Southeast Missouri State University, and Matthew Yount, Southeast instructor of music, will perform a piano recital, "Fourteen X Five X Four," at 3 p.m. Sept. 29 in the Shuck Music Recital Hall at Southeast's River Campus. The program will feature 14 pieces by five composers, performed by four pianists. Yount will perform works by Sergei Rachmaninoff, and Hampton will present works by Chopin and Griffes. Two Southeast piano majors, Tiffany Hennings of Florissant, Mo., who is pursuing a bachelor's degree in music, and Joel Melchior of Perryville, Mo., who is pursuing a bachelor's degree in music education, will present solo repertoire by Bach and Bartok. This will be Hampton's debut performance at Southeast. The concert also will be the first performance on a new Steinway piano in the Shuck Recital Hall. Cinema series begins season at Carbondale

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois University-Carbondale College of Mass Communications and Media Arts, WSIU Public Broadcasting and the Carbondale Public Library have joined forces for a third season of Community Cinema, a series of free screenings from the PBS series "Independent Lens." Each screening will be at the library on the last Saturday of every month at 2:30 p.m. Screenings will be held monthly through May, except for the months of November, December, and January. The season begins Sept. 28 with "The Graduates," a film that explores the roots of the Latino dropout crisis. A discussion will follow the screening. Beer fest will benefit Counseling Center

The Community Counseling Center Foundation will hold the second annual Cape Girardeau Craft Beer Festival from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 5 at Arena Park. Admission is $30 in advance and $35 at the gate. This includes a pilsner beer glass, tasting of more than 100 beers from more than 25 microbreweries, home-brewing demonstrations, live music by the Jerry Ford German Band, food from Cook's Bar-B-Que and hourly drawings for gifts and prizes. Proceeds will go to the Community Counseling Center Foundation to provide improved facilities, equipment and services to persons with mental illness. Tickets are available at all Community Counseling Center locations, Bluff City Beer, Primo Vino, Kidd's Gas and Convenience stores, P-Mac Music, Dirt Cheap and John Huber Home Brew Supply in Fruitland or at the gate.

Arts Council to hold reception for Baird

The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, 32 N. Main St. in Cape Girardeau, will host a reception for Cape Girardeau artist and Southeast Missouri University professor Michael Baird from 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 4 at the council gallery. Baird's October exhibit will be centered on the theme of "Monsters" and will feature primarily three-dimensional sculptural artwork, such as puppets, masks and free-standing figures. His exhibit will be accompanied by a narration describing the stories from which his artworks generated. The exhibit is intended to be family-friendly for the most part, but the artist cautions that smaller children "of a more sensitive constitution" may find the monsters to be frightening.

Free 'Goonies' movie at Jackson park

"The Goonies" will be shown at the Rock Garden in Jackson's City Park at 7 p.m. Oct. 5. The screening is free, and viewers are asked to bring chairs and blankets. Concessions will be available, and costumes are welcome. For more information, call Jackson Parks & Recreation at 204-8848.
