The sixth annual "New Student Showcase," featuring the talents of freshmen and transfer students majoring in theater and dance at Southeast Missouri State University, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Rust Flexible Theatre at the River Campus. Students will present scenes from plays, monologues, songs and dance. The event is sponsored each year by Southeast's Department of Theatre and Dance. It is free to the public.
Southeast Missouri State University's Department of Art has been awarded a $10,000 National Endowment for the Arts grant to help expand its art outreach program. Art Reach, Bridging the Arts across Cape is an expansion of the Art Reach program this fall. Art Reach is a volunteer effort which helps underserved children attending the Bridge Outreach Center and is a partnership between the university and the Southeast Missouri Arts Council. The grant will allow the program to be extended to Jefferson School in Cape Girardeau, the SEMO Alliance for Disability Independence and the Community Counseling Center. The Children's Theatre Workshop, which teaches acting, singing and music to interested youngsters, will be at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus in conjunction with its staging of "Hairspray" in October. The workshop, sponsored by the Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts, is open to students in grades two to seven. Classes will run from 9 a.m. to noon beginning Oct. 18 and continue Saturdays through Nov. 15. A final performance will be staged for family and friends at 11 a.m. Nov. 15. The classes will be in Room 114 of the River Campus Center. Instructors will be Southeast alumni Megan Walton and Sami Gross. Space is limited, and the deadline to register is Oct. 11. Cape West 14 Cine, 247 Seimers Drive in Cape Girardeau, is one of more than 300 cinemas across the United States and Canada that will feature "My Little Pony Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks" beginning Sept. 27. The full-length movie features My Little Pony favorites Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Rarity and Fluttershy. Tickets may be purchased at wehrenberg.com.
Paranormal-horror author Breanna Bright will give a talk from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, 32 N. Main St. in Cape Girardeau. Bright is from Sedgewickville, Missouri, and is a master's in English candidate at Southeast Missouri State University. She recently released her first novel, "In the End," with Permuted Press. It is the first book in a series of three. Bright's Arts Council talk will include spooky tales she uncovered while researching her books. Guests are invited to bring in their copies of her novel for signing after the talk. Books also will be available for purchase at the Arts Council for $17.
