State parks, historic sites backdrop for folk concerts

The sounds of folk music will be heard at three state parks and historic sites this weekend with concerts featuring the Dowden Sisters in New Madrid, Mo., Jackson and Burdfordville. Events begin at 6 p.m. today with a performance at Hunter-Dawson State Historic Site; at 7 p.m. Saturday at the amphitheater at Trail of Tears State Park; and at 4:30 p.m. Sunday in the picnic area at Bollinger Mill State Historic Site. Celebrating shrimp with live music in Golconda

GOLCONDA, Ill. -- Main Street Golconda's fourth annual Shrimp Festival in Golconda takes place from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday. In addition to having plenty of shrimp to feast upon, the festival will feature live music by Shady Mix, Brad Belt, Rhonda & the Whoopie Cats and Chicken Foot Gumbo; a motorcycle show; river taxi, helicopter, and horse and buggy rides; children's activities; the Junior Miss Shrimp Fest pageant; and a cook-off. Gospel concert to be held at Lake Wappapello

WAPPAPELLO, Mo. -- The Laymen Gospel Quartet from Malden, Mo., will perform tonight at Lake Wappapello Outdoor Theatre, and The Dement Brothers will perform Saturday. New IMAX film exposes nature's violent side

ST. LOUIS -- Starting today, the St. Louis Science Center will be showing the latest IMAX film, "Forces of Nature," at its OMNIMAX theater. The film is about nature's fiercest displays of power -- earthquakes, volcanoes and tornadoes. Not only does the film capture these forces on camera, it also takes audiences behind the scenes with scientists who study these events. The St. Louis Science Center is at 5050 Oakland Ave. in St. Louis.

Radio City comes to St. Louis

ST. LOUIS -- Tickets go on sale Saturday for "The Radio City Christmas Spectacular" starring the Rockettes that will be performed at St. Louis' Fox Theatre in December. Members of the Rockettes will be at the Fox Theatre ticket office, 527 N. Grand Blvd., at 10 a.m. Saturday. For more ticket information, call (314) 534-1111. The Radio City show has been playing in cities outside of New York since 1994, but this is the first year the show has come to St. Louis.

Cabaret season opens in St. Louis

St. LOUIS -- The Grand Center Cabaret Series (formerly known as the Grandel Theatre Cabaret Series) starts its 11th season in the Sheldon Concert Hall, 3648 Washington Blvd. in St. Louis on Sept. 22 with "An Evening with Christine Andreas." This performance is a compilation of stage actress Andreas' most recent musical shows. 'Smokey Joe's Cafe' opens in Carbondale

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The musical "Smokey Joe's Cafe" comes to Shryock Auditorium in Carbondale, Ill. at 7:30 p.m., Sept. 22. It tells the story of love won and lost through song and dance and features classic songs like "Love Potion No. Nine," "Why Do Fools Fall in Love?" and "Jailhouse Rock." Poetry contest offered

Southeast Missouri State University has announced a contest for the Copperdome Poetry Chapbook Award. To be considered, writers must send 20 to 24 pages of their poetry and a separate sheet with the title, author's name, address and phone number. Entries also must include a $15 fee.
