The Southeast Missouri State University Choral Union will begin fall rehearsals Sept. 3 in preparation for a Dec. 3 concert performance in conjunction with the Southeast Missouri Symphony Orchestra. Rehearsals are from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays in Room 155 of the Cultural Arts Center at the River Campus. Membership in the Choral Union is open to all experienced and confident singers. The repertoire for the fall semester will include "Suite One" and "Suite Three" of "The Many Moods of Christmas" arranged by Robert Shaw and Robert Russell Bennett. Additional repertoire will include two secular carols arranged by John Rutter -- "The Very Best Time of the Year" and "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" -- along with Morten Lauridsen's "O Magnum Mysterium" and Donald Fraser's "This Christmastide" (Jessye's Carol). The spring semester concert will include Haydn's final major work, the "Harmoniemesse" (Wind-Band Mass). It will be performed with a quartet of faculty soloists and the Southeast Missouri Symphony Orchestra on May 6. Music will be available for purchase at the first rehearsals. KRCU Public Radio at Southeast Missouri State University welcomes folk musicians Cathy Barton and Dave Para to Cave Vineyard in Ste. Genevieve, Mo., on Aug. 30 for an evening of folk music. A social hour begins at 6 p.m. with wine tastings provided by Cave Vineyard and refreshments by Bistro Saffron. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. All guests will receive a KRCU souvenir wineglass. The next Saturday Social at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, 32 N. Main St., in Cape Girardeau, will feature baskets and basket weaving by Caroline Kahler. The event will be at 2 p.m. Sept. 7 at the Arts Council. Kahler is the chair of the Southeast Missouri State University Art Department. She makes both traditional and contemporary-style baskets, and has been weaving baskets for more than 37 years. Attendees are encouraged to bring their baskets to the Saturday Social, during which time Kahler will identify them and discuss any concerns regarding their care. The River City Rodders Car Club, in conjunction with Old Town Cape and the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau, will host the River Tales Classic Car Show on Sept. 15 in downtown Cape Girardeau. Vehicles will be displayed along Main Street and in the parking lot across from Hutson's Fine Furniture. The major sponsors for this year's show are NAPA Auto Tire & Parts and EVTV Motor Werks. More than 200 cars and trucks are expected. Trophies will be awarded in 32 classes. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with judging scheduled to begin at noon.
