Hoops for Life will present Rick Springfield in concert Saturday at the Bedell Performance Hall at the River Campus. The opening ceremony begins at 8 p.m. and the concert at 8:30 p.m. All proceeds will benefit pediatric brain tumor research in memory of Sahara "Hoops" Aldridge. Run/walk benefits brain tumor research

The Hoops for Life 5K Run/Walk will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Kiwanis Park. Proceeds of this event will benefit the Pediatric Brain Tumor Research Program at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford University in memory of Sahara "Hoops" Aldridge. Registration forms are available at Missouri Running Co., P-Mac Music, Fitness Pluss, HealthPoint Fitness (Cape and Jackson), Top of the Line Consign, the Osage Centre and the Arena Building. Registration forms are also available at caperoadrunners.org or hoopsforlife.net.

Metal on Deck at Dockside Saturday

Midwest Media will present Metal on Deck Saturday evening at Dockside the Upper Deck. Artifakt will begin performing at 8 p.m., followed by Synapse, Aenomy and Kings Among Men. The doors will open at 7:30 p.m., and there will be a $5 cover charge. For more information, phone 573-579-8145.

Brewfest offers local beer sampling

Local beer distributors will be offering samples of their latest favorites at the Red, White and Brewfest this evening at the Bel Air Grill. The event begins at 7 p.m. and will include a barbecue buffet, with a portion of the proceeds going to a local veterans organization. Dave Hutson will also have his Willys 1951 Army jeep at the festival. Music will be provided by The Theory. Admission to the brewfest is $5 and is open to those 21 and older.

Book club to discuss life of Louis Houck

Author Joel Rhodes will lead a discussion of his book, "A Missouri Railroad Pioneer: The Life of Louis Houck," at a meeting of the Monday Night Book Club. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Monday in the Penzel Conference Room at the Cape Girardeau Public Library. Rhodes is an associate professor of history at Southeast Missouri State University.
