SIKESTON, Mo. -- Sherry Newton, a Southeast Missouri native, will be displaying her Christian-themed oil paintings titled "Inspirational Oils" at the Sikeston Depot Museum in July and August. The museum will also be showing "By Invitation Only ... Photography as Art" by David Strom, Teresa Gemeinhardt, Dr. Joel Ray, Tom Neumeyer and John Gilbert. The museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. A reception will be from 2 to 4 p.m. July 24 at 116 W. Malone Ave. The reception is open to the public and refreshments will be served.
To kick off its summer film festival, the Cape River Heritage Museum is showing the film version of the musical comedy about the Declaration of Independence, "1776." The Cape River Heritage Museum will be showing historical films once or twice a month on Fridays during the summer. "1776" will be shown from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the museum, 518 Independence St. Admission is $2 and includes popcorn and a drink.
PADUCAH, Ky. -- Starting Aug. 13, teams of filmmakers will have 48 hours to make a 5- to 7-minute movie for the 48-Hour Film Project. The 48-HFP was started in May 2001 and promotes filmmakers by pushing doing, not talking. Registration before July 19 is $135 and $155 after. Teams will draw for genres including thriller/suspense and comedy among others at 7 p.m. Aug. 13, and the character, prop and line of dialogue that must be used by each participant will be announced. Then filmmakers will have until 7:30 p.m. Aug. 15 to turn in their films. There will be awards for categories such as directing, acting, cinematography and editing. The film that wins best picture will be screened with other winning films at the NAB Show in Las Vegas and the top 10 films from 2010 will be screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 2011.
