Area man leads Oprah's Book Club discussions

Dr. Robert Hamblin, a professor of English at Southeast Missouri State University and director of the university's Faulkner Center, has been tapped by Oprah Winfrey to lead discussions of the William Faulkner novel "As I Lay Dying" for her book club, the world's largest with more than 600,000 members. Hamblin leads the discussions on the book club Web site at Oprah.com each Monday night in June at 6 p.m.

Players looking for living mural interpreters

The River City Players are looking for individuals to be live mural interpreters for the July 7 dedication of The Mississippi River Tales mural. If you would like to be involved in this part of Mississippi River history or would like more information, call Roseanna Whitlow 334-9997.

Tunes at Twilight to feature Stephen Taylor

Austin, Texas singer/songwriter Stephen Taylor will be the featured artist at this week's Tunes at Twilight concert series, to be held today at 7 p.m. at the Common Pleas Courthouse gazebo. The concert is free. For more information, call Old Town Cape at 334-8085.

Cape library to show foreign film Tuesday

The Cape Girardeau Public Library will show the independent Canadian film "Wilbe Wonderful," a dark comedy, at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Hirsch Community Room. The film runs 99 minutes and snacks will be served. The showing is free. The film has adult themes and is not for children. For more information, call 334-5279.

Dad Fest this weekend at Tower Rock Winery

ALTENBURG, Mo. -- The Tower Rock Winery in Altenburg will hold two days of celebration this weekend with its Dad Fest. The festival kicks off Saturday with a performance by Bruce Zimmerman from 2 to 6 p.m. Steve Schaffner follows on Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. For more information, call the winery at (573) 824-5479.

All's faire at Cape library Renaissance event

The Cape Girardeau Public Library will hold its Renaissance Family Faire Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cape Girardeau Public Library. Games, food and crafts from the Renaissance period will be featured. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 334-5279.

River City Players seek 'A Few Good Men'

The River City Players community theater will soon begin auditions for its August production of Aaron Sorkin's "A Few Good Men." Auditions, consisting only of a cold reading, will be June 25 at 1 p.m. and June 29 at 6:30 p.m. at the River City Yacht Club. Roles are available for men and women age 17 and older, and others are needed for nonacting positions.

Archaeological society show coming to Cape

The Greater St. Louis Archaeological Society is sponsoring a Native American Artifact Show June 26 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Drury Lodge in Cape Girardeau. The finest private collections of American Indian artifacts in Missouri and five neighboring states will be available for public viewing. The GSLAS requests a $3 entrance fee.
