Grampa Woo yacht coming to Cape Girardeau riverfront Tuesday

The Grampa Woo luxury yacht will be visiting Cape Girardeau starting Tuesday, with an afternoon Mississippi River cruise starting at 1 p.m. Several events and cruises are lined up through May 29. 'Sheep Shots' reception opening at Schock Community Arts Center

An opening reception will be held today from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Schock Community Arts Center in Scott City for "Sheep Shots," an exhibit of photos from Australia and New Zealand taken by local artist Jan Chamberlain. The photos were taken in February and illustrate the sheep-raising culture in New Zealand and Australia, where the photographer said "sheep outnumber people." The exhibit will be on display throughout May. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

First Friday opening reception today at Gallery 1.2.5

Gallery 1.2.5, 125 Main St. in Cape Girardeau, will hold a First Friday opening reception today from 4 to 8 p.m. with wine and hors d'oeuvres. The gallery features a unique collection of oils, prints and accessories.

First Friday opening at arts council galleries

Throughout May, the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will feature the works of Missouri artists Rosemary Claus-Gray and Ralph Freer in Gallery 100. Claus-Gray is a fiber artist inspired by the lines, shapes and color found in nature. Freer primarily sculpts in wood and his focus is the exploration of shapes, form and color. The Lorimier Gallery will feature the art of Arnor Bieltvedt, an Icelandic artist who creates expressive, abstract and spiritual portraits, all in mixed media with a variety of styles. An opening reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today. For more information, call the arts council at 334-9233.

Musical lineup announced for ArtsCape festival

The musical lineup has been announced for the ArtsCape festival May 21 at Capaha Park beginning at 10 a.m. Performers scheduled to appear at the park bandshell include:

* Doug Rees, a singer/songwriter from Jackson, at 10 a.m.

* Bruce Zimmerman, a rock musician from Cape Girardeau, at 11 a.m.

* Bryan Hayes, and independent artist from Cordova, Tenn., at noon

* Quitman McBride III, a rhythm and blues musician and winner of last year's Heartland Idol contest, at 1 p.m.

* Mike Renick, a folk-rock singer/songwriter from Cape Girardeau, at 2 p.m.

* Cindy Kalmenson, an independent Nashville recording artist, at 3 p.m.

* Keith Sykes, from Memphis, a former member of Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band, at 4 p.m.

Heartland Writers Guild sponsors workshop in Cape Girardeau

The Heartland Writers Guild is sponsoring a one-day writing workshop in Cape Girardeau on June 4. Presenters will offer sessions of Writing Your Family and Community History. The keynote speaker will be Thomas Eaton, a full-time faculty member at Southeast Missouri State University who teaches creative writing and literature. There is a fee for the event. Graduating Southeast poets give 'Last Stand' at Barnes & Noble

The English Department at Southeast Missouri State University and Barnes & Noble Booksellers will present "The Last Stand," a farewell poetry reading for graduating seniors and masters candidates, today at 8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Chickasaw Nation Dancers appearing at Wickliffe Mounds

WICKLIFFE, Ky. -- The Chickasaw Nation Dancers will perform at Wickliffe Mounds State Historic Site on May 14, with dances at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Throughout the day the dancers will present storytelling, flute playing, crafts demonstrations and games. First Friday opening at The Artist Studio

The Artist Studio at 38A N. Main St. will hold a First Friday opening today from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The opening will showcase acrylics created in an experimental workshop conducted in April, featuring the work of Elizabeth Bradley, Debbie Ebaugh, Lolita Hayes, Judi Hutson and Marilyn Zeller. The studio will also be accepting signups for workshops starting in June. For more information, call the studio at 651-4464.

Garden Gallery showcases student work

A First Friday opening will be held tonight from 6 to 9 p.m. at Garden Gallery, 833 Broadway, above Grace Cafe. Artwork by 15 Central High School seniors will be on display and will remain on display through Thursday. For more information, call 332-7123.
