ALTENBURG, Mo. -- The second annual Altenburg Truck Pull will be Saturday at the East Perry Community Fairgrounds in Altenburg. The first hook will be at 3 p.m. Spectator gates open at 2 p.m., while the pit gate opens at 1 p.m. There will be 11 classes of trucks at the event. Fifteen sponsors at $500 each means a total of $7,500 in prize money, in addition to 100 percent of the puller entry fees. Food and drinks will be available on the grounds. No coolers, outside food or drinks. The Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, 32 N. Main St., will host a reception for artists Alex Paulus and Jake Wells from 5 to 9 p.m. June 7. A show featuring solo exhibits by both artists will be on display at the Arts Council gallery until June 29. Wells, a Cape Girardeau native, uses a variety of media in producing his work. A portion of his June exhibit at the Arts Council will be an installation show and will display pieces constructed from wheat suspended from the ceiling. Paulus' display will be his first in Cape Girardeau in 10 years. Wine will be available for guests of the First Friday reception, courtesy of Major Brands. The Visual Arts Cooperative also will debut new works in its gallery space at the Arts Council on June 7.
The Cape Girardeau Roller Girls will compete in their third home bout of the roller derby season June 8 at the Arena Building. Undefeated in a 5-0 season, the Roller Girls hope to continue their winning streak as they face the West Kentucky Rocking Rollers of Paducah, Ky. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the bout begins at 7 p.m. As the group waits to receive not-for-profit status, the team donates proceeds from every bout to a local charity. Benefiting from the June 8 bout will be the Community United Effort Center for Missing Persons. Concessions will be provided by Pitter's, where an after party will be held immediately following the event. Tickets are $7 in advance or $9 at the door and may be purchased at Pitter's and P. Mac Music, online at brownpapertickets.com or from any member of the Cape Girardeau Roller Girls. Children ages 5 and younger get in free.
Phyllis Adams will be the guest artist for the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri's Saturday Social from 2 to 4 p.m. June 22 at the council's gallery. Adams is known for her silver jewelry and garden art creations. She recently became interested in making lawn art of recycled dinnerware. During the Saturday Social, Adams will aid workshop participants in creating their own recycled lawn art. The Arts Council will provide the appropriate glue and preparation materials. Participants are responsible for bringing a bud vase and odds and ends saucers, bowls, cups, goblets, etc., to use. All ages are welcome to attend, but parental supervision is required for children younger than age 12. Workshop fees cover supplies and instruction. Fees are $10 for Arts Council members and $15 for nonmembers. For reservations or more information, call the Arts Council at 334-9233.
Jackson's annual Fourth of July celebration will kick off with a 5K walk/run and a children's fun run at 7:04 a.m. The start and finish will be at HealthPoint Fitness. The day's other activities will be at Jackson City Park: 8 a.m., mud volleyball; 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., the Jackson Elks 2652 beer garden; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., car show; 10 a.m., Little Miss Firecracker Pageant at the band shell, with registration starting at 9 a.m.; 11 a.m., patriotic bicycle parade, art in the park, food stands and pony rides; 7 p.m., Southern Brothers at the band shell; 8 p.m., the Jackson Municipal Band at the band shell, and 9:30 p.m., fireworks display.
