POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- The Margaret Harwell Art Museum is accepting entries for the 23rd annual Pictures by the People photo contest. Photographers within a 100-mile radius of Poplar Bluff may enter up to three photos of any subject. Prints must be a minimum of 8 by 10 inches and a maximum of 20 by 24 inches, framed with wire or hanger attached to the back; no sawtooth hangers. Put name, address, phone number, photo title and division on the back of the photo. Enclose the same information on a separate sheet for labeling purposes. Deadline for entries is 4 p.m. June 27. Mail entry to the museum, 421 N. Main St., Poplar Bluff, MO 63901, or bring it in person from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday to Friday; 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The Rock Garden in Jackson's main City Park will host singer/songwriters each Friday in June. The "Rock in the Rock Garden" free concert series will be from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Rock Garden by the foot bridge over the creek on Cascade Drive. Bruce Zimmerman, Doug Rees, Mark Rees and Casey Benefield are the scheduled performers. Concert attendees can bring blankets and chairs, but glass containers are prohibited in the park.
Each Thursday the featured artist for the Tunes at Twilight concert series in Cape Girardeau will play a preview concert at Stooges in Jackson. The restaurant will have local artist Doug Rees open the show and then introduce the artist for the week. Call 204-7187 for reservations or more information.
The Big River Tribe Chapter 295 of the Southern Cruisers Riding Club will host a "Cruisin' for a Cure" bike show Saturday at Rhymer's on the Plaza. The event will raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. After the bike show there will be a dance featuring Mid-Life Crisis at Rhymer's, with door prizes and a 50/50 drawing. The bike show will be from 3 to 7 p.m. and the dance will start at 9 p.m.
The River City Players will perform its summer dinner theater show, "The Ransom of Red Chief," at Port Cape. The play tells the story of a kidnapping gone hilariously wrong. The dinner shows will be June 5, 11 and 12, with the meal starting at 6 and show at 7 p.m. A show-only performance will start at 7 p.m. June 10. There will be a matinee performance June 13 with dessert served at 1:30 and show at 2 p.m. Tickets are $30 for dinner show; $15 for dessert matinee and $12 for show only. A wine and cheese reception will be held for Robert Hamblin and his new book "This House, This Town" at the Cape River Heritage Museum. The book, illustrated by Hamblin's wife Kaye, tells the history of the Harrison House and the couple's experiences restoring the home, which was built 1898. The reception will be from 5 to 7 p.m. June 4. Hamblin will be signing books, which will be available for $12.
