Cape Muny Band to play twice on Memorial Day

The Cape Girardeau Municipal Band will perform two concerts on Memorial Day. The concerts will be the band's first of the season.

The band will play from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Monday at the Osage Community Centre as part of the Memorial Day service.

The second concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Capaha Park Band Shell. The time is earlier than the band's regular weekly performances. Audience members are asked to bring lawn chairs to the second concert.

The concert will include marches and patriotic music. Military veterans in the audience will be recognized.

The program will include "Salute to Freedom Concert March," "Star Spangled Spectacular, the Music of George M. Cohan," "American Patrol March," "Themes Like Old Times," Sousa's "Golden Jubilee March," "the 140th Infantry March," "Armed Forces Salute," "God Bless America," "Richard Rodgers: A Symphonic Portrait" and Sousa's most famous march, "The Stars and Stripes Forever."

The band's regular season will begin June 4 and continue at the same time each Wednesday at the band shell for 11 weeks through Aug. 6. Those concerts will start at 8 p.m.

The band also will perform in downtown Cape Girardeau on the Fourth of July before the traditional fireworks display.

'Dysfunctional folk' at house concert Thursday

Danzig and Woolley, a North Carolina-based duo who play music they call "dysfunctional folk," will perform in Cape Girardeau Thursday.

The house concert will begin at 7 p.m. at the home of Jean and Larry Underberg.

Danzig and Woolley have recorded four CDs: "Thinking Out Loud," "Lately," "Free the Poet," and "The Key."

Songwriter Kevin Danzig is the lead vocalist and plays guitar, harmonica, and "foot tambourine." He recently was one of eight finalists in a songwriting competition entered by 1,500 composers. The results are pending. Danzig also has five Billboard Songwriting Awards to his credit.

His songs have been compared to those of Crosby, Stills & Nash and to those of Simon and Garfunkel, but he claims to be more influenced by Lennon and McCartney.

Cat Woolley provides harmony vocals, plays mandolin and occasionally adds bells, xylophone and percussion.

The duo has toured together for six years. They will be stopping in Cape Girardeau after their Main Stage performance at the Kerrville Folk Festival.

Danzig and Woolley will perform at 7 the following night in the second Tunes at Twilight concert at the Courthouse Gazebo.

Teen night tonight at River City Yacht Club

The local band A Few Minutes to Think and others will perform at a teen night tonight at the River City Yacht Club.

The bands will play from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

'Coming to a Sky ...' to open in Memphis

MEMPHIS -- "Coming to A Sky Near You," a new planetarium show at the Pink Palace in Memphis, opens today.

The show focuses on the history of celestial events. It continues through Aug. 24.

'Threads of Prosperity' at St. Louis Art Museum

ST. LOUIS -- 'Threads of Prosperity: American Domestic Textiles, 1750-1875," opens June 3 at the St. Louis Art Museum and continues through Jan. 4.

The show includes American quilts, coverlets, samplers, mourning pictures and rare silk panorama.

Shady Mix rescheduled Sunday at Bollinger Mill

BURFORDVILLE, Mo. -- The band Shady Mix will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Bollinger Mill State Historic Site.

The band was scheduled to play last Sunday, but the performance was postponed due to bad weather.

The band uses only acoustic instruments to play bluegrass, cowboy songs and older American folk music. The audience is asked to bring lawn chairs. The concert is free.

Wrestling matches daily at Six Flags

ST. LOUIS -- Kachunga -- The Alligator Wrestler will be presented Monday through June 29 at Six Flags St. Louis.

Native American Woods Walk May 31

WICKLIFFE, Ky. -- Wickliffe Mounds Research Center will present its annual Native American Woods Walk on May 31.

Victoria Fortner, a Native American herbalist, will lead the walk through the trails at Wickliffe Mounds. She will identify plants and discuss their medicinal uses and edible qualities.

Walks are scheduled for 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Admission is $5 for adults, $4.75 for senior citizens, $4 for children ages 6 to 11 and free for children under age 6.

Street painting winners announced

Winners have been announced in the third annual Cape Street Painting Festival. The festival was sponsored by the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri.

Michaelyn Burns, Amber Branson, Katie Williams, all Central High School students, won the People's Choice Award.

In the Individual Award, Eric Rogers and Erin Gryzmala tied for first place. Robert Friedrich was second and Inga Comer-Silver finished third. Receiving honorable mentions were Alex Paulus, Cal Thomas and Doug Baltz.

In the Group Award, the Jessy Wells group finished first, the Leah Ulrich group finished second and the Jake Wells group was third.

In the Student Award, Michaelyn Burns, Amber Branson and Katie Williams were first, Michael Bricknell was second and Courtney Bonney placed third. Receiving honorable mentions were Laura Bricknell, Amanda Cox and Rienna Silver.

The jurors were Craig Thomas, who is the Cape Street Painting Festival coordinator; Chelsea Bowerman of the arts council staff; and arts council intern Jamie Geragosian.

'Beauty and the Beast' opens June 10

'Kiss Me Kate' in Paducah

PADUCAH, Ky. -- The Market House Theatre will conclude its 39th season with the Broadway musical "Kiss Me Kate" to be presented June 12 through 15, 19 through 22 and 26 through 28.

The musical comedy play-within-a-play is about a divorced acting couple who reunite for a production of a musical "Taming of the Shrew." The music and lyrics are by Cole Porter.

Shows are at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and at 2:30 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets are $12 for the Thursday and Sunday shows and $14 for the Friday and Saturday performances. Senior ticket prices are $10 for Thursday and Sunday performances only.
