Vocal Arts Boot Camp scheduled for June

Southeast Missouri State University's Department of Music will hold its third annual Vocal Arts Boot Camp from June 15 through 20 at the River Campus. The camp, to be held in the new Dobbins River Campus Center, will help students develop and strengthen their singing abilities by working on vocal techniques and performance skills. The boot camp is open to students in grades seven through 12 who have completed one tier of choral or solo training. It will cover a variety of musical styles. Participants also may take part in social activities, including attending the musical "Seussical." The boot camp will culminate in a performance during the second annual Southeast Missouri Summer Arts Festival on June 20. For more information and registration links, visit semo.edu/camps. Museum hosts MACHINEWORX

The Crisp Museum at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus will host MACHINEWORX, a free, four-day, summer academy for youth June 2 through 5. Morning sessions for ages 4 to 8 will run from 9 to 11 a.m., with adult supervision required for preschoolers. Afternoon sessions for children ages 9 to 15 will be from 1 to 4 p.m. MACHINEWORX will offer participants hands-on mechanical activities with such machines as wheels and axles, levers, gears, pulleys, wedges and inclined planes. Seating will be limited, so preregistration is required by calling the museum at 651-2260 or emailing museum@semo.edu.

Jackson to rock the park Saturday

That '80s Band will perform at the first Rockin' the Park, to be held from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the Jackson City Park bandshell. Gates will open at 6 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce, along with 104.7 KREZ and KGMO 100.7 FM. Tickets are $10, while those 10 and younger get in free. Preconcert tickets are available at the Jackson chamber office. A best-dressed '80s contest will be part of the festivities, along with food and a cash bar. Bring a lawn chair.
