Three new exhibits open today at arts council

Oil paintings and watercolors are represented in three new exhibits opening today at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri.

Oil paintings by Cape Girardeau native David Gross and by Barbara B. Cleary will be exhibited in the Lorimier Gallery, while watercolors by another Cape Girardeau native, Patricia Harris Leavell, will be shown in Gallery 100.

Guitarist Ethan Keller will perform during the reception from 5 to 8 p.m. today. Keller plays for the Milwaukee band Greenscene.

Fresh work by 41 artists also can be seen in the Visual Arts Cooperative gallery.

Both Gross and Cleary are artists primarily concerned with landscapes and still lifes. Before concentrating on oil painting, Gross was an engraver for more than 20 years, creating work for the White House, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and for Martha Stewart.

He has a B.F.A. from the Kansas City Art Institute and an M.F.A. from Indiana University in Bloomington.

Cleary helped found the Kansas Watercolor Society and the Palette and Chisel, a Chicago arts organization.

Leavell paints "atmospheric" scenes from the Southwest, Central America, Mexico, France and Bermuda. She has a B.F.A. from Southeast Missouri State University and an M.F.A. from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Returning to Cape Girardeau from Dallas in 1988, she opened the Hoche House Gallery on the main floor of the 1838 Phillip Hoche House.

She moved back to Dallas in 1991 and re-opened a design practice.

Work by Dr. Max Cordonnier, Carolyn Simmons and Margaret Dement, all members of the Visual Arts Cooperative, will be spotlighted in the gallery windows through May 15.

Graduating seniors featured in reading series

The last reading of the Journey Student Reading Series for the school year will present the work of seniors graduating from Southeast Missouri State University.

The reading will be held at 7 tonight at Barnes & Noble Bookseller sin Cape Girardeau.

'Your Folk Connection' spreads to Columbia

KBIA 91.3, the NPR affiliate in Columbia, Mo., will begin airing "Your Folk Connection" Saturday.

The show is produced locally by KRCU 90.9 FM. Its hosts are Barney Hartline, Jim Hickam and Terry Wright. It also is heard on WSIU 91.9 FM in Carbondale, Ill, WUSI 90.3 FM in Olney, Ill., WVSI 88.9 FM in Mt. Vernon, Ill., and WEIU 88.9 FM in Charleston, Ill.

Celebration of Arts at Kelly schools

BENTON, Mo. -- The Kelly Middle School and Kelly High School will hold a Celebration of the Arts today, Saturday and Sunday.

The events beginning at 3 p.m. today include an art fair for the public at the high school gym, a talent show, a pops concert and barbecue and more talent competition.

The art fair will reopen at 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by a 1:30 concert by the Elementary Honor Choir at 1:30 p.m. at the high school gym. Activities will continue through 8 p.m.

On Sunday, the air fair will reopen at 1 p.m., followed by a 2:30 p.m. pops concert by the high school choir at the elementary school gym.

Photography show today, Saturday

Dr. Samuel E. Bishop will present a one-man photography show today and Saturday at the Juden Schoolhouse in Cape Girardeau.

Bishop is an art professor at Southeast Missouri State University.

A reception will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the schoolhouse, 900 W. Cape Rock Drive. The show consisting of 30 photographs also will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Choral Union, symphony in 'Viennese Classics'

Music by Beethoven and Schubert will presented in a concert Tuesday by the Choral Union and University Choir and the Southeast Missouri State University Symphony Orchestra.

"Viennese Classics" will offer Beethoven's "Egmont Overture," Schubert's "Mass in G" and the "Gloria" from Beethoven's "Mass in C Major."

Soloists will be Lori Shaffer. Dr. Leslie Jones, Dr. Christopher Goeke and Southeast alumnus Tyson Zahner of Jackson.

The choral groups are directed by Dr. John Egbert. Dr. Sara Edgerton conducts the orchestra.

Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for university faculty, staff and senior citizens, and $4 for students. Preferred-reserved seating is available for $10 by calling the University Performing Box Office at 651-2265.

Musical weekend in store

The Milwaukee band Greenscene will perform tonight at the River City Yacht Club in downtown Cape Girardeau. Doors open at 8, with music from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Performing from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday will be the Carbondale, Ill., alt-bluegrass band Broken Grass. Admission is $3 for 21 and over and $5 for 18 to 20 both nights.

Broken Grass also will perform at 3 p.m. during an Earth Day Celebration Saturday afternoon on the terraces at Southeast Missouri State University. Also performing at Earth Day 2003 will be Doc Bertram at noon and Southeast professor Dr. Dale Haskell at 1 p.m.

Information booths and food also will be available.

'Site Works' to open Wednesday

"Site Works: Dance on Tour" will be presented Wednesday through Saturday at various locations. It is presented by Southeast Missouri State University's Department of Theatre and Dance.

The show includes acting, singing, dancing, drumming and sword-play.

Performances will be at noon Wednesday on the Terraces stage at Southeast; 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Schock Art Center in Scott City; 7:30 Friday at the Bootheel Youth Museum in Malden, Mo.; and at 11 a.m. Saturday in downtown Cape Girardeau and again at 4 p.m. Saturday on the lawn of the River Campus.

Concert band to play Thursday

The Southeast Missouri State University Concert Band will present its final concert of the semester at 8 p.m. Thursday.

Selections will include "Fantasia in G," "Folk Song Suite," "Irish Tune from County Derry," "Shepherd's Hey" and First Suite In E flat, Opus 28, No. 1.

The band is directed by Barry Bernhardt.

Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children and free with a university I.D.

'Sylvia' to open May 9

The River City Players will present the comedy "Sylvia" May 9-10, 15, 16 and 17 at the River City Yacht Club.

On May 15, doors open at 7 p.m., with the show at 7:30. Tickets for that show are $7.

All other shows are dinner theaters, with doors opening at 6 p.m., dinner served at 6:30 and the show beginning at 8. Dinner theater tickets are $19.95.

Southeast alumnus to give country concert

Southeast alumnus Chris Blair will perform May 9 at The Camp, 701 N. Main St. in Cape Girardeau.

Now a resident of St. Louis, Blair released a single, "Who Do you Think You Are?," that was No. 1 on the Independent County Music chart in February 1999. Two other singles also reached the No. 1 spot in 1999.

He received the New Horizon Award at the 1999 Independent Gold Music Awards in Nashville. At The Camp he will debut his newest single, "State to State, written by Southeast student Keith Evans.

The concert will begin at 8 p.m.

Spring Arts Festival May 10

A Spring Arts Festival will be held May 10 in downtown Cape Girardeau. Sponsored by the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, the festival will include an arts and crafts street fair, a street painting festival, a program that enables disabled people to create art, and a dance presentation titled "Site Works."

These will be presented from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the parking lot by the Boardman Pavilion in downtown Cape Girardeau.

Zoo announces new summer hours

ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Zoo's new summer hours will begin May 23. The zoo will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week.

In the past the zoo was open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with several late-hour evenings during the summer.

In addition, admission to the Carousel, Emerson Children's Zoo and Monsanto Insectarium will be free from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. during the summer.
