New exhibits open at Arts Council of Southeast Missouri

Exhibits "Pulp Elements" by Teresa Mosley Dirks and "Walkin' Down Main Street" by Tim Hahn will be on display beginning today at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri.

The exhibits open with an artists' reception from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight. Dr. Dale Haskell will provide music at the reception.

Mosley Dirks is a a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University and teaches at Malden schools. Her work showcases handmade papers and textures. Other works in the exhibit include digital photography and hand-painted black and white fiber prints.

Hahn is an instructor at St. Charles County Community College and describes his work as a mix of abstraction and realism. His work drawing and painting in color and black and white on multiple wood panels is both decorative and narrative.

Acting workshop for youths Saturday in Jackson

Starcatchers Community Theatre will sponsor a one-day acting workshop for youths from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Brooke Clubbs will conduct the workshop to be held in Jackson. Sixth- and seventh-graders are invited; students should bring a sack lunch. Cost is $12 per person. For information, phone 243-1450.

Red Dagger to present 'Diary of Anne Frank'

The Red Dagger Drama Club at Central High School will present "The Diary of Anne Frank" April 10 to 12. Show times are 7:30 p.m. nightly in the Central Junior High School auditorium.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for children.

Exhibit at Anna Center to feature Brenda Seyer

Work by Cape Girardeau resident Brenda Seyer will be exhibited at the Anna Center of Shawnee Community College during the month of April.

The exhibit includes portrait drawings done using live models. Most of the works is done in terra cotta pencils and pastels.

Seyer has shown her work at the center and Gallery 100, as well as the Cape Girardeau Public Library.

The Anna Center is open from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday. There is no admission charge.

Percussion ensemble to perform in Kennett

The Southeast Missouri State University percussion ensemble will perform at 7 p.m. Monday at the Christian Life Center at First United Methodist Church in Kennett. Admission is free.

The ensemble will perform its selections on four marimbas, two vibes, two chimes, a xylophone, orchestra bells, drums and cymbals as well as four timpani.

The performance is sponsored by the Friends of Music in Kennett.

Classic 'South Pacific' to show at Carbondale

Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic "South Pacific" will be performed at 7:30 p.m. April 11 at the Shryock Auditorium in Carbondale, Ill. Tickets are $26, with a $6 discount for children 15 and younger. For ticket information, call (618) 453-ARTS.

Wine-tasting, antique show planned

The Community Counseling Center Foundation will sponsor its second annual Community Benefit Wine Festival April 11 at Deerfield Lodge in Cape Girardeau.

The event begins at 6 p.m. and admission is $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Admission includes a wine glass, hors d'oeuvres and entertainment by Pat Schwent and Saxy Jazz.

The foundation also will sponsor an antique and collectible show April 13 at the A.C. Brase Arena Building. The show will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a preshow sale at 8 a.m. Admission to the show is $1. Preshow admission is $5.

All proceeds will benefit the counseling center and its programs.

Tanning workshop at Wickliffe Mounds

Gordon Holmes, a primitive lifeways specialist, will conduct a workshop April 12 and 13 on tanning hides and arrow construction from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Wickliffe Mounds in Wickliffe, Ky.

The workshop includes hands-on training in tanning deer hides using ancient methods and in making a primitive arrow.

Cost is $50 for all materials and instruction.

University choir presents spring concerts

The University Choir at Southeast Missouri State University will present its annual spring concert at 8 p.m. April 15 at Cape Bible Chapel.

Admission is free.

The concert includes romantic and 20th century choral music as well as traditional folk tunes and music from South America. The final choral concert is May 6.

Chilean vocalist to make encore performance

Chilean vocalist Claudia Acuna returns to Jazz at the Bistro April 16 to 19. Show times are 8:30 and 10:15 p.m.

Acuna last appeared at Jazz at the Bistro in January. Tickets are $23 and $28 and are available by calling (314) 534-1111.

Celtic music festival at Carbondale

The Southern Illinois Irish Festival will be held April 25 and 26 in Carbondale.

The main event on opening night is a concert by Cathie Ryan and her band April 25 at Shyrock Auditorium. The free-admission event April 26 includes Irish food and merchandise and a parade at 10 a.m.

Cultural presentations also will be planned throughout the event.

Piano praise planned at Charleston church

First Baptist Church in Charleston, Mo., will present its annual "Piano Praise" concert in conjunction with the annual Dogwood-Azalea Festival April 26-27.

The program features eight pianos and 16 pianists. Performances are at 3 and 8 p.m. April 26 and at 3:30 p.m. April 27.

Quilt museum begins summer hours

The Museum of the American Quilter's Society in Paducah, Ky., now has expanded hours for the summer season.

The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

It is the largest quilt museum in the world, and features changing exhibits. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students and children. No admission is charged for viewing lobby displays.
