Arts council offers summer classes
It's almost time to register for the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri's 29th annual summer art classes. Courses for ages 1 to adult are being offered and include "Drawing: Learning to See," "Architectural Drawing" and "Beginning Watercolor," among others. Winner of ArtsCape poster contest named
Kelly Hughes' "Spirit of ArtsCape 2004" was selected as the winning design for the ArtsCape poster competition. Hughes' design will appear on posters and T-shirts for the fourth annual ArtsCape, an outdoor arts and crafts festival. The event is sponsored by the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri. The design will be unveiled at an ArtsCape party Sunday.
Derby party planned in Paducah on Saturday
PADUCAH, Ky. -- From 3:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday, the Market House Theater will hold the second annual "Ultimate Derby Party." The celebration will take place in the courtyard of Max's Brick Oven Restaurant in the Market House Square and will raise money for outreach programs benefiting schools and youths from low-income and rural areas. The 130th Kentucky Derby will be shown in Maiden Alley Cinema and people will be able to place bets in a 50/50 raffle. A buffet, beer, wine and mint juleps are included in the ticket price. Makanda to hold spring festival this weekend
MAKANDA, Ill. -- This small Southern Illinois community will hold a "Spring Fest" Saturday and Sunday. Makanda is home to historical sights such as a boardwalk built in 1897 and several artists studios. At the festival, more than 30 art vendors will sell crafts including pottery and jewelry. The event also will offer music and food. The town is about eight miles from Carbondale on Route 51.
Space Day planned at St. Louis Science Center
On Saturday, the St. Louis Science Center will hold a taping of Passport to Knowledge's "New Views" with guest Bill "The Science Guy" Nye and the show "Marsapolooza St. Louis," in conjunction with the center's traveling exhibition, "Space: A Journey to Our Future." Art awards presented to local students
Three of Brenda Seyer's private art students received awards at the Woman's Club of Paducah Annual Art Show. Jessica Sterns received first place in grades four to five, Casey Schwab received third place in grades six to eight and Mackenzie Hill received an honorable mention in grades two to three.
Pork butts on sale for July Fourth fireworks
Sales for Port Cape's hickory-smoked pork butts began Thursday. The money raised from the sale of the pork butts will go toward Libertyfest, the July Fourth fireworks celebration in the Old Town Cape District. Orders for the pork butts, which are four to five pounds, will be taken now until July 1 and can be picked up from May 1 to July 1 at Port Cape, 19 N. Water St. in Cape Girardeau. Orders can be taken at Tom Higgins Accounting and Tax Service Office at 112 Themis St., by phone at 335-1456 or from one of the Old Town Cape volunteers.
Guild of Decoupeurs offers convention
PADUCAH, Ky. -- The National Guild of Decoupeurs will gather for its annual event this weekend at J.R.'s Executive Inn in Paducah. The Guild will present an exhibit today and Saturday featuring home decorating designs from furniture to wall hangings and lamps. The exhibit runs from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Decoupage is the art of assembling and composing paper cutouts for decorative purposes. The guild has members in six countries and meets in a different city each year to present the art form to the public.
