SIU seeks Illinois art entries for juried show

The University Museum at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale is asking for entries from Illinois artists for "Woven Dreams," an upcoming, juried art show on weavings. The Best of Show entry receives a $300 award. All work must be the artist's own and must have been created within the past five years. There is a $5 charge per entry; size restrictions apply. The deadline for the image submissions is July 18. Call 618-453-5388 for more information.

Fruitland church plans summer music festival

Wesley United Methodist Church in Fruitland will host a Summer Music Festival to help raise funds for Mid America Teen Challenge. The festival is slated for June 14, and will feature artists like Jeremy Verhines with Solomon's Porch, Three Strand Rope from Springfield, Mo., Tyler Montgomery from Dexter, Mo., and Jackson native Doug Rees. Tickets go on sale Sunday, and are $10 per person, $8 per person for groups of 10 or more. Children 5 and younger are free. Scenic drive scheduled for this weekend

The Mississippi River Valley Scenic Drive carves a path through Southeast Missouri as far south as Commerce and north to Perryville. Several rural communities and towns along the way will have festivals, music, dancing, crafts, living history events, camping and more. Cape Girardeau attractions such as the Red House, the Glenn House, the River Heritage Museum, the Crisp Museum at the River Campus, Fort D, Old St. Vincent's Catholic Church and Trail of Tears State Park will be open for tours and interpretation. There will be historic town tours in Altenburg, Jackson, Marble Hill, Brazeau, Commerce and Oak Ridge.
