Protest singer will perform in Carbondale
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Rabble-rousing folk singer David Rovics will perform at 10 tonight at the HQ Gallery, 211 W. Main St. in Carbondale.
Rovics is a mainstay on the North American protest scene, having performed at anti-war demonstrations in New York City and protests against the IMF and World Bank in Quebec City and Prague.
The concert is sponsored by SIUC's Student Environmental Center. Admission is $5.
National quilt show opens Wednesday
PADUCAH, Ky. -- The annual American Quilter's Society Quilt Show opens Wednesday and continues through April 26 at the Museum of the American Quilter's Society in Paducah.
The event annually draws thousands of quilters and quilt fans to the MAQS exhibit galleries.
Hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
Author Jennifer Chiaverini, whose newest book is titled "The Quilter's Legacy," will sign copies of her books Wednesday at the museum. That event will begin at 3 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
Other special events include a benefit silent auction from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at the Executive Inn Showroom, a live benefit auction at 7 p.m. Thursday, a lecture at 5 p.m. April 25 titled "Quilter in a Strange Land" by San Franciscan Joe Cunningham, and a musical quilt show with Cunningham at 5 p.m. April 5.
Redemption, Bain perform tonight
The alternative rock band Redemption will perform along with Dennis Ray Bain and his Rockin' Rhythm & Blues tonight at The Camp, 701 N. Main St. in Cape Girardeau.
The show begins at 9:30.
Beckwith Lecture on 'Ghost Boats'
The annual Thomas Beckwith Memorial Lecture to be presented Thursday is titled "Ghost Boats on the Mississippi: Discovering Our Working Past."
The speaker is Dr. Leslie Stewart-Abernathy, an archaeologist with the Arkansas Archaeological Society. He is a contributor to the upcoming book "Ghost Boats on the Mississippi: Discovering Our Working Past." He will talk about watercraft remains found on the bottom of the Mississippi River at West Memphis, Ark., in 1988. That year, record low water levels exposed the remains of vessels dating to the late 1800s and early 1900s. They included two model barges, a coal flat, a stern wheel steamboat and a tiny johnboat.
The lecture will begin at 7 p.m. in the University Museum galleries in Memorial Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.
Auditions for Southeast play April 27
Auditions for the fall production of the drama "Two Rooms" will be held at 2 p.m. April 27 by the Department of Theatre and Dance at Southeast Missouri State University.
The play is the story of an American professor held hostage in Beirut, Lebanon, and the efforts of his wife to free him. Scenes switch between the professor's cell in Beirut and his study in the U.S., where his wife keeps vigil.
The work by Lee Blessing was written in 1988.
Auditions will be held in the Lab Theatre, Room 103 of the Grauel Building at Pacific and Normal streets. Two men and two women will be cast. Interested persons are asked to prepare a dramatic monologue of less than two minutes. Auditions also will include cold readings from the script. Scenic drive scheduled for April 26, 27
The Mississippi River Valley Scenic Drive will be held April 26-27. Events are planned around the region, including an art show by the Cat Ranch Arch Guild in Marble Hill and another by the Jackson Area Arts Council in Jackson.
The Bollinger Mill State Historic Site in Burfordville, Mo., will hold an open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.
Live music will be performed on the porch of the historic mill. Tours will be free.
Visitors also will have the opportunity to drive across the mill's covered bridge, one of only four surviving covered bridges in the state.
Bootheel art show seeks entries
SIKESTON, Mo. -- Entries are being accepted for the Bootheel Regional Art Guild Judged Art Show. Artists may enter up to three paintings. The fee is $15.
Work should be delivered to the Sikeston Depot, corner of New Madrid Street and W. Malone Avenue in Sikeston, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 30.
Prizes will be awarded in the categories of still life, floral, landscape, genre, portrait, animal, abstract and sculpture. Craig Thomas of Cape Girardeau will judge the show.
A reception will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. May 4.

Voce Festiva to sing May 4
Voce Festiva, a women's vocal ensemble, will perform May 4 at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau.
The program will include Celtic mouth music, a Gaelic walking song and folk songs from Saskatchewan and Karelia. A setting of Shakespeare's "How Sweet the Moonlight Sleeps," Javier Busto's "Popule Meus" and Rene Clausen's "Set Me as a Seal" also will be performed along with "Fair Warning," the American folk songs "Shenandoah" and "Old Joe Clark" and the Irish folk tune "Danny Boy."
The ensemble consists of Stephanie Fridley, Hays Hendricks, Leslie Jones, Mary Mims, Lori Shaffer and Christy Shinn. the piano accompanist is John Shelton.
The concert is free and open to the public. It will begin at 4 p.m. The church is located at 1900 Cape LaCroix Road.
