Guitar ensemble to play April 21 at Southeast

The Southeast Missouri State University Guitar Ensemble will perform at 8 p.m. April 21 in the Lutheran Chapel on the Southeast campus.

The chapel is located at 903 College Hill in Cape Girardeau.

Solos will include Fernando Sor's "Variations on a Theme by Mozart" and "Preludes" by Hietor Villa-Lobos. A guitar duo will perform "Spanish Dance" by Granados and a suite by Leo Brouwer.

The Southeast Guitar Trio will reprise their performance of a work by Paulo Bellinati they recently played in Chicago at the Mid-America Guitar Ensemble Festival.

The ensembles are directed by Jeff Noonan, director of guitar studies at Southeast.

The concert is free and open to the public.

'Wind ensemble concert April 24

The Symphonic Wind Ensemble at Southeast Missouri State University will present its annual "Olde-tyme Band Concert" April 24 at the University Center Ballroom.

The concert will feature faculty member Michael Dean performing "The Pre-Goodman Rag" for clarinet, and senior music major and pianist Tyson Wunderlich of Altenburg, Mo., playing Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue."

Along with several marches, the ensemble will perform the Frank Zappa composition "Dog Breath Variations."

Dr. Tom Harte, host of "Cafe Concerto" on KRCU-FM, will emcee.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $6 general, $5 for faculty, staff and senior citizens and $4 for students.

Jazz trumpet legend to return for festival

Jazz trumpet legend Clark Terry will return to Southeast Missouri State University April 25 for the jazz festival named for him.

The fifth annual Phi Mu Alpha/Clark Terry Jazz Festival will be held throughout the day at Academic Auditorium, the Baptist Student Union chapel and the Newman Center chapel, culminating with a concert at 7 p.m. in Academic Auditorium.

Junior and senior high school jazz bands and combos will compete.

Terry is headlining the festival for the fourth consecutive year. Southeast presented Terry with an honorary degree in 2000. Among the 10 other schools he holds honorary degrees from are the Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music.

Terry began his career in music in St. Louis in the 1920s. He has been inducted into the Kansas City Jazz Hall of Fame and the St. Louis Walk of Fame. After stints with Count Basie, Duke Ellington and other bands, he became famous as a soloist with the NBC Tonight Show Band.

Tickets for the evening concert range from $5 to $20. They will be available at the door or by calling the Southeast Department of Music at 651-2141.

Three-man art show opens today

A three-man art show by students at Southeast Missouri State University opens today at the Juden Schoolhouse, 900 W. Cape Rock Drive.

The show of work by Jake Wells of Cape Girardeau and Alex Paulus and Matt Unterreiner, both of Perryville, will be open from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday.

ND graduate in off-Broadway production

Jessica Hency, a Notre Dame High School alumnus who graduated with honors from New York University last May, will appear in an off-Broadway play opening May 14 in New York City.

The play is called "Mollie's Dream." It is being produced by the Soho Repertory Theatre.

Entries sought for Girardot exhibit

Entries are being accepted fort the Girardot National Juried Exhibition sponsored by the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri.

The show is open to all artists 18 and older living in the U.S. All work must be original in any medium and process. Slides must be received by May 9.

Cash prices will be awarded. The exhibition will be display at the arts council's Gallery 100 and Lorimier Gallery from July 7 through 25.

The juror is Southern California artist and curator Barbara Thompson, a senior member of the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art.

Klugman in 'On Golden Pond' April 26

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- "On Golden Pond," starring Jack Klugman, will be presented April 26 at SIU's Shryock Auditorium.

The actor, best known for his roles in TV's "The Odd Couple" and "Quincy," debuted on Broadway in "Goldenboy" in 1952. He has received three Emmys, a nomination for a Tony award, a Golden Globe Award and a Chloe Award.

Tickets are $26 with a $6 discount for children 15 and younger.

Painting chosen for oils show

Artwork by Roger Brown, son of Earlene Brown of Cape Girardeau, has been chosen for the Oil Painters of America National Juried Exhibition to be held in Taos, N.M., in May.

His painting "Frozen Heartland" was selected for the show, which includes work from painters around the world. Brown lives in Nashville, Tenn.

'Greater Tuna' at the Fox
