Student Juried Art Exhibition opens today

The annual Student Juried Art Exhibition opens today at the University Museum in Memorial Hall at Southeast Missouri State University.

The show will consist of art created by Southeast students during the past year. In late March, the students submitted at least two pieces to be judged by juror Stephen Black of Vincennes University at Vincennes, Ind. Black chose 30 to 40 works to hang in the museum from the more than 300 paintings, sculptures, drawings, fine crafts, graphic designs, prints and illustrations.

An opening reception and awards ceremony will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. April 4.

Work not selected for the exhibition will be shown at the "Salon de Refuse" show to open April 4 at the Schock Community Art Center in Scott City. The Salon de Refuse is in the tradition of exhibitions by mid-18th century Parisian artists who mounted their own shows when their work was not accepted at the annual Salon, a conservative state-sponsored exhibition of paintings.

The reception for the Salon de Refuse will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. April 4 at the center, 116 E. Hickory in Scott City.

The Salon de Refuse will be open from noon to 4 p.m. April 5 and April 12, and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 6 and April 13.

The University museum is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and from noon to 4 p.m. on weekends.

The exhibitions will remain on display until April 17. Much of the art will be for sale.

In conjunction with the annual Student Assessment Exhibition, the University Museum will sponsor a program titled "Young Artists at Work" on April 5. Children and adults are invited to play games and make art together and go on a scavenger hunt in the museum galleries.

The event will be held from noon to 4 p.m., but visitors can stop by at any time. A ration of one adult for every two children is recommended.

No registration is necessary. The program is free.
