'Afternoon Folk' concert Saturday in Scott City

A music festival titled "Afternoon Folk" will be presented Saturday at the Schock Community Arts Center in Scott City.

Jim Hickam, Barney Hartline and Terry Wright, hosts of KRCU-FM 90.9's "Your Folk Connection, will be the hosts. The musicians will include singer-songwriter Dale Haskell, the group Too Wet to Plow, autoharpist Dan Wiethop, percussionist Don Greenwood and Nashville singer-songwriter Hunter Moore.

The 1 to 3 p.m. concert will be recorded for broadcast March 29 on "Your Folk Connection." Admission is free. The concert is co-sponsored by KRCU and the Scott City Historic Preservation Commission.

The arts center is located at the corner of 2nd Street and Mar Elm in Scott City. To get there, go east on Main Street in Scott City and turn right on Route N across the railroad overpass. For information, phone 651-5070.

Nashville singer performs at Grace Cafe in Cape

Nashville singer-songwriter Hunter Moore returns to Cape Girardeau for a performance Saturday night at Grace Cafe, Broadway and Pacific streets.

Moore performed in England, Switzerland, Germany, Holland and Belgium during a European tour last fall.

The concert will begin at 8 p.m. Admission is $5.

Pub Crawl planned St. Patrick's Day

Downtown Cape Girardeau nightclubs and restaurants will participate in the annual St. Patrick's Day Pub Crawl from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday.

Participants include Port Cape, Broussard's, the Billiard Center, Nick's Family Sports Pub, Space Walk Cafe, Breakaways, Rude Dog Pub, Mollie's, the Royal N'Orleans restaurant, Buckner's, the Bel Air Grill, the Pour House and Jeremiah's.

Sponsoring restaurants and bars will donate $50 toward a downtown beautification project.

Participants in the Pub Crawl just have to purchase any kind of drink at each location and get their card stamped. Those who complete the pub crawl will win a gift.

Many of the pubs and restaurants are offering their own special foods and drinks to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

Norah Jones in concert July 15

ST. LOUIS -- 2003 multiple Grammy winner Norah Jones will perform at the Fox Theatre July 15.

Jones won five Grammys at the most recent award show, including Album of the Year, Record of the Year ("Don't Know Why"), Best New Artist, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album.

Also appearing will be Richard Julian, whose independent album "Good Life" has been well reviewed in the mainstream press.

American Chamber Players at Cedarhurst March 23

MT. VERNON, Ill. -- The American Chamber Players, founded by former NPR "Performance Today" host Miles Hoffman, will perform March 23 in the Main Gallery of the Mitchell Museum at Cedarhurst.

Fruehwald composition to be premiered

The Southeast Symphonic Wind Ensemble will premiere "A Farmington Divertimento," a composition by Southeast Missouri State University faculty member Robert Fruehwald March 27.

Also spotlighted will be soprano Lori Shaffer, who will perform Bernard Gilmore's "Five Folk Songs for Soprano and Band."

This is the third work Fruehwald has written for the ensemble. The concert also will include works by Percy Grainger, Frank Zappa and John Philip Sousa. The Fredericktown High School Wind Ensemble also will perform.

The university ensemble is directed by Dr. Robert Gifford.

Admission is $6 general, $5 for senior citizens, university faculty and university students, and $4 for other students.

The concert will begin at 8 p.m. at Academic Auditorium. Shuttle bus service will be provided from the Dempster lots.

Zimmerman in house concert

Cape Girardeau singer-guitarist Bruce Zimmerman will perform a house concert of acoustic blues March 27 in Cape Girardeau.

The concert will be presented from 7-9 p.m. For information and directions, phone 334-7692. The suggested donation is $8.

Music from India at St. Louis art Museum

ST. LOUIS -- Musician and educator Ustad Imrat Khan will perform March 30 at the St. Louis Art Museum.

Khan, an artist in residence at Washington University, is a master of the sitar and the surbahar. He presentation will delve into his ancestors' history as musicians at the court of the Mughal Emperors of India.

The 3 p.m. performance is in conjunction with the exhibition "Jeweled Arts of India" at the museum through April. 20.

Looking for the dinosaurs

ST. LOUIS -- PaleoTrek 2003 will offer participants an opportunity to dig fossils in Montana in June.

The trip is sponsored by the St. Louis Science Center and the Eastern Missouri Society of Paleontology. Two week-long trips are scheduled for June 7-14 and June 21-28.

The first expedition is open to anyone over age 16. The second trip is reserved for educators only.

Teams will dig for fossils near the famous Hell Creek Formation created 65 to 68 million years ago. It contains some of the best fossil specimens in the world. During the Late Cretaceous Period the region was roamed by triceratops, tyrannosaurus rex and hadrosaurs.

Finds from last year's trip included a triceratops femur, ribs, vertebrae and pelvic bone.

Spaces are limited to 12 people per week. The cost is $1,950 per person, which includes airfare, lodging, meals, lectures and entertainment. The cost is $1,550 per person if the participant provides transportation to Montana.
