The 2010 Family Winter Series started Jan. 30 and runs each Saturday through March 6. Families can see a free movie at 10 a.m. Saturdays and receive discounts on certain snacks. The second concert in the 2009-2010 Jazz Series by Southeast Missouri State University's Department of Music will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Bedell Performance Hall. The Studio Jazz Ensemble and the Jazz Lab Band will perform along with Joe Eckert, former lead alto saxophonist with the Air Force's jazz band, The Airmen of Note, and a faculty member at Texas Christian University. The Mississippi Mud House will transform into a cozy theater for a screening of "Dark Road," the locally-made thriller about a small-town sheriff who gets caught up in a mob murder. The viewing will start at 7:15 p.m. today. Two more shows will be at 7 and 9 p.m. Saturday. Admission for each show is $2. The cast and crew will be available for questions at the shows.
The Valentine's Day edition of Chamber Music Sundays at Three will feature violinists Liesl Schoenberger and Ching-Yi Lin. Schoenberger started violin at age 2 in Cape Girardeau, received her bachelor's and master's from Indiana University and is now an artist diploma candidate in violin performance at Yale University. Lin is a soloist and chamber musician who has performed throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe and Taiwan. Just before the holiday of love, Dr. Drew Pinsky will speak at Southeast Missouri State University. Pinsky, host of radio call-in program "Loveline" and star of the VH1 show "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew," will speak at 7 p.m. Feb. 11 in Academic Auditorium. Tickets are free, but required for entry. They are available at the University Center, room 202 or the Office of Residence Life in Towers Complex.
