Southeast Missouri State University Press is calling for submissions for an anthology of veterans' creative writing and photography. In conjunction with executive director Geoff Giglierano of the Missouri Humanities Council and director Deborah Marshall of the Warriors' Arts Alliance, a veterans' support organization, the University Press is publishing an anthology of writing and photography by men and women who have served in America's military in any conflict. It will be released to the public in November. Profits from the sale of the anthology will go toward scholarships for veterans. Veterans may submit previously unpublished poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction (personal essay) or photography to Warriors' Arts Anthology, Southeast Missouri State University Press, One University Plaza--MS 2650, Cape Girardeau, Mo. For more information, contact the University Press at 651-2044.
The Warriors' Arts Alliance is sponsoring a contest for prose and poetry, with prizes of $250 in each genre. Entries are limited to 5,000 words for prose (fiction and creative nonfiction) or up to three poems (five pages) for poetry. There is no entry fee; submissions must postmarked by midnight Aug. 1. Contest manuscripts must be submitted electronically as a Microsoft Word document. (Save with a .doc extension.) All poems should be combined into one document, using the first poem's title as the title of the document. The author's name and contact information should be included on the first page of the submission document and nowhere else within the manuscript. The submission should also include a brief (75 words or less) biography of the writer. All contest entries will be considered for publication in the Warriors' Arts Anthology. Send to: upress@semo.edu. Winners will be announced by Nov. 1. For more information, contact the University Press at 651-2044.
POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- Blank canvases are available now for the second annual Art for Animals exhibit and auction to be held April 20 to May 4 at Artfully Framed in the Bluff Estates Shopping Center at Poplar Bluff. The event generates money for the Animal Welfare Alliance. Anyone old enough to hold a brush can take part. Each artist paints a 5-by-7-inch canvas and brings it back to Artfully Framed by 5 p.m. April 13. Blank canvases are $10 for adult artists ($5 for each additional canvas) and $5 for child, middle school or high school artists ($3 for each additional canvas). Store employees will frame the paintings and hang them on display in the gallery starting April 20, when a wine-and-hors d'oeuvres reception kicks off two weeks of silent-auction bidding on the paintings. The paintings will also be posted on the Artfully Framed Facebook page, where people can track the bidding. On May 4, a second reception will close the event and wind up the bidding. Last year's inaugural Art for Animals event featured 54 original works and netted more than $3,500 for AWA. For more information about Art for Animals, call Artfully Framed during business hours at 573-785-6178.
