Dixie Carter to appear at Poplar Bluff arts center

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- Actress and singer Dixie Carter will appear at the Tinnin Fine Arts Center in Poplar Bluff on Dec. 3, in "An Evening with Dixie Carter." Proceeds from the show will benefit the Claudia Foundation, a not-for-profit organization founded by TV writer/producer Linda Bloodworth Thomason in her hometown of Poplar Bluff to provide scholarships and opportunities for young women. Symphony orchestra, Choral Union team up

The Southeast Missouri Symphony Orchestra will join with the Southeast Missouri State University Choral Union and University Choir for a festive choral/orchestra concert Nov. 29. The concert will feature Francis Poulenc's "Gloria" for soprano, chorus and orchestra (with a solo by Mary Mims) along with orchestral works by Georges Bizet and Edvard Grieg. Southeast, Jackson High wind symphonies perform

The Southeast Missouri State University Wind Symphony will team up with the Jackson High School Wind Symphony for a concert at 8 p.m. Dec. 1 in Academic Auditorium. Music on the program includes "Fire" by Gary Gilroy, "Salvation is Created" by Tschnekoff, "An Outdoor Overture" by Aaron Copland and the march from "Symphonic Metamorphosis" by Paul Hindemith. Golden Eagles band goes back to Scotland in 2008

The Southeast Missouri State University Golden Eagles Marching Band will return to the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in the summer of 2008 in Edinburgh, Scotland. The Golden Eagles are currently accepting applications for the trip. Admission to the university is required to attend and preference will be given to those with prior Golden Eagles experience. Jazz bands hold concert tonight at university

Southeast Missouri State University's Jazz Lab and Studio Jazz ensembles will appear in their annual fall concert at 8 p.m. today in the University Center Ballroom. The bands will play a variety of jazz tunes from jazz greats like Count Basie. For more information, call 651-2265.

Arts council board takes part in Prudential project

During the month of October, members of the board of directors of the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri took part in Prudential Financial's "Global Volunteer Day" by volunteering their time in local elementary school classrooms. This marks the sixth year Prudential and the local arts council have teamed up for the project. In exchange for participation, the arts council will receive a $1,000 grant from Prudential.

Gallery owner attends first MACAA board meeting

Garden Gallery owner Linda Bohnsack attended her first meeting as a member of the Missouri Association of Community Arts Agencies board of directors this month. Bohnsack was recently chosen to be a part of the organization's board of directors. MACAA is a statewide service organization with the mission of strengthening arts agencies and artists throughout Missouri.

Missouri Arts Council meeting coming Dec. 8

The Missouri Arts Council will sponsor a Strategic Plan meeting in Cape Girardeau from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, 32 N. Main St. The meetings are designed as a forum for community members to tell the state agency how it can help address community needs. 'Sing Along Messiah' returns in Jackson Dec. 3

The Jackson Area Arts Council again sponsor a "Sing Along Messiah" program at the New McKendree United Methodist Church Sanctuary at 4 p.m. Dec. 3. The free 30-minute event will feature four of Handel's Christmas Choruses and the "Hallelujah" under the direction of Dr. John Egbert and accompanied by Christy Shinn.
