Hunter Valley Winery will host an Octoberfest weekend with wine, barbecue, arts and craft vendors and live music. Mark Rees plays Saturday, and blues band Barefoot Trolley will play Sunday. No coolers or picnic baskets are allowed, but attendees may bring lawn chairs or blankets. The winery has craft beers, original wines and a sculpture park. It currently hosts an exhibit by local artist Jim Parker in the Grape View Room. Festivities will be from noon to 6 p.m. and from noon to 6 p.m. and Sunday.
Ann Ibur will conduct an oil plein air workshop to teach the method of painting with oils in the open air from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 16 at Jones Heritage Farm and Market. The entry fee for the class is $50. Students need oil paints, easel and small canvases. For more information or to register, call 334-9233.
The fifth annual Mingo Swamp Flora and Fauna Photography Contest will be on display at the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center in October. Several dozen photos are featured in the show, and each of them highlights some part of nature in Missouri. The contest promotes awareness of and the beauty of the Mingo National Wildlife Refuge.
