Safety Safari to be held at Lazy L Safari

The sirens will be screaming during the second annual Safety Safari to be held at the Lazy L Safari Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 20. Safety Safari is presented annually by Lazy L Safari Park and Discovery Playhouse in Cape Girardeau. There will be hands-on demonstrations and activities on bullying, backpack safety, fire safety, family emergency preparedness and animal safety. Red Rocktoberfest run benefits Red Cross

The second annual Red Rocktoberfest 5K Run will be held Oct. 27 in downtown Cape Girardeau. Registration begins at 4 p.m. at the Bel Air Grill on the day of the event, with the race starting at 5 p.m. Those registering before Wednesday will pay a $20 registration fee, which includes a T-shirt. The registration fee the day of the race is $25, with T-shirts available while supplies last. Participants may also pick up their race day packet Oct. 26 between noon and 5 p.m. at the Cape Girardeau Red Cross office, 2430 Myra Drive. Organizers encourage runners or walkers to dress in their best costume for the event. Those who are unable to make the race may sign up as virtual runners and still receive T-shirts. Cape theater to hold 'Twilight' marathon

To celebrate the opening of "Twilight: Breaking Dawn, Part 2" on Nov. 16, Cape West 14 Cine will hold a "Twilight" marathon beginning at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 15. Guests will see the first four "Twilight" films back to back, then experience the new release. Tickets are $25 for all five films. Cape West Cine will also be offering a "Twilight Breaking Dawn, Part 1 and 2" double feature for $13. Tickets are on sale now at www.wehrenberg.com.

Ill. forest participating in survey program

HARRISBURG, Ill. -- U.S. Forest Service employees and volunteers at Shawnee National Forest will be participating in the National Visitor Use Survey program during the coming year. Visitors to the forest will be asked to share their opinions with Forest Service team members. All information will be confidential and voluntary. The data collected will be used for forest planning. The interview lasts less than 15 minutes and asks participants where they recreated in the forest, how many people they traveled with, how long they were in the forest, what other recreation sites they visited while in the forest, and how satisfied they were with the facilities and services provided. About one-third of the visitors will be asked to complete a confidential survey on recreation spending during their trip. SEMO dance students perform in St. Louis

Southeast Missouri State University's Department of Theatre and Dance students were selected to perform in "Dancing in the Streets" Sept. 29 in St. Louis for the fourth straight year. The sixth annual St. Louis dance festival was held at the Grand Center in downtown St. Louis. Students who performed included Emily Brand, Sam Fink, Corey Meyer and Joii Williams of St. Louis; Caitlin Fields of O'Fallon, Mo.; Chance Hill of Cape Girardeau; Thomas Proctor of Silex, Mo.; and Carol Saint-Amour.

Led Zep concert to play at Cape West Cine

Several Wehrenberg Theatres, including Cape West 14 Cine in Cape Girardeau, will show "Celebration Day," a film of the 2007 Led Zeppelin concert at London's O2 Arena. The film will be shown here at 7 and 9:40 p.m. Oct. 17. The concert was a tribute to Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. Founding members of the band -- John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant -- were joined on stage by Jason Bonham, the son of late drummer John Bonham, in the performance of 16 songs, including "Whole Lotta Love," "Rock And Roll," "Kashmir," and "Stairway To Heaven."

Venue changed for annual craft fair

The 17th annual Crafts, Gifts and Collectibles Show will be held at Notre Dame Regional High School this year, rather than at the Bavarian Halle in Fruitland. Dates for the event are Nov. 16 to 18. Times are 5 to 9 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Admissions remains $1 on Friday and Saturday; free on Sunday. Accepted items include crafts, antiques/collectibles, church and school organizations and home-based businesses. All vendors and non-handmade items must be approved. Proceeds will benefit the Notre Dame performing and visual arts program, as well as soldier packages, Toys for Tots, Toybox and Christmas for the Elderly. For vendor information, contact Dixie J. Civil War Day at Logan College scheduled

CARTERVILLE, Ill. -- Live music on fiddle, banjo and guitar will help entertain and enlighten the crowd at Civil War Day on Wednesday at John A. Logan College here. Admission will be free for the event, which is sponsored by the college's Continuing Education Department. The day's activities include music by Don and Lori Buedel and Joanne Long of the Smoky Hollow String Band and a Civil War commemoration by hundreds of school children. Storyteller Brian Ellis will impersonate "Black Jack" Logan at 9:15 a.m. in the conference center. Musicians and re-enactors will be outdoors starting at 10:30 a.m. At 12:30 p.m., Ellis will entertain the crowd with "Civil War Ghosts and Legends." Re-enactors will be in character again from 1:30 to 2 p.m., and the day's events will conclude at 2 p.m.

Dance St. Louis to bring show to Cape

Dance St. Louis, a not-for-profit organization and one of the oldest dance presenters in the United States, will bring "New Dance Horizons" to the Southeast Missouri State University River Campus at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 16 in the Bedell Performance Hall. A quartet of renowned choreographers from around the nation collaborates with four St. Louis companies to create world premieres.
