Homecoming events include parade, football

This weekend marks Southeast Missouri State University's Homecoming, and there are some events open to the general public. At noon today, the university's Department of Speech, Communication and Theatre will hold "Conversations with the McNeely Family on the Theatre, Television and Film" at the Rose Theatre. Alums Don, Jerry and Jane McNeely will discuss their successful careers in stage, television and film. Saturday's homecoming parade will start at 9:30 a.m. at the corner of Broadway and West End Boulevard and run east on Broadway to Main Street. This year's parade will feature an international theme. There are also several tailgate parties prior to the 1 p.m. football game at Houck Stadium, the largest of which will be at the stadium's tailgate area from 11 to 12:45 p.m. Rap artist Murphy Lee, now enrolled at the university and taking online classes, will serve as the honorary captain and coach of the university's football team. At 11:30 a.m., Lee will sign autographs in the presidential ambassadors' reunion tent in the tailgating area of Houck Stadium.

Haunted Hall of Horror, Ghost Town still scaring

The scares continue this weekend at Arena Building and the Black Forest Village. At the arena, the Haunted Hall of Horror is open from 7 p.m. to midnight today and Saturday and from 7 to 11 p.m. Sunday. Black Forest's Haunted Ghost Town is open from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. today and Saturday.

A spooky Sunday night at the opera with 'Dracula'

At 7 p.m. Sunday, KRCU 90.9 FM will present a special edition of "Sunday Night at the Opera" for Halloween. The program, which will be held by sorceress Morgana, will feature Philip Feeney's "Dracula" in its entirety. The story of Dracula also will be told between the ballet's acts, complete with sound effects and musical cues.

Halloween house concert with Arthur Godfrey

Musician Arthur Godfrey makes a return to Cape Girardeau for an Underburg house concert at 7 p.m. Sunday. Since his house concert performance last year in Cape Girardeau, Godfrey, a Boston native, has won the John Lennon Songwriting grand prize for a second time and performed at a house concert at the Kennedy compound. Also performing Sunday is Thomm Jutz, who recently moved to Nashville,Tenn., where he is a studio musician. Because it is Halloween, costumes are encouraged but not required. Author to speak at Depot Museum book signing

SIKESTON, Mo. -- B. Mildred Smith, the author of "Delmo, Threshold of Freedom," will give a presentation and book signing at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Sikeston Cultural Development Corp.'s Depot Museum, 116 W. Malone St. in Sikeston. The book is about the period in the late 1930s and early 1940s in Southeast Missouri when the plight of sharecropping families started to improve thanks to a combination of private philanthropy and government programs. Specifically, the book is about Delmo Labor Homes, built to provide an alternative to homes provided by landowners.

'The Jungle Book' comes to Paducah

PADUCAH, Ky. -- The Market House Theatre in Paducah, Ky., will perform "The Jungle Book" for a two-weekend run starting Thursday. The production is based on the classic story by Rudyard Kipling and flashes back between the jungle and a young Kipling in the process of writing this story for a literary contest at his British boarding school. Performances are Thursday to Nov. 7 and Nov. 12 to 14; Thursday and Friday shows start at 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday shows start at 2:30 p.m. For more information or tickets, call the theater at (270) 444-6828.
