St. Louis Brass Quintet to play Oct. 18.
The St. Louis Brass Quintet will perform Oct. 18 at Centenary United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau.
The quintet consists of two trumpets, one French horn, a trombone and tuba. The virtuoso performers are known for their humorous approach to music.
"Animal Ditties," a work that sets brass music to humorous poems by Ogden Nash, will be presented. Also on the program are "Dixieland Medley" and "Sweet Georgia Brown."
The 8 p.m. performance is being presented in conjunction with the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri's annual membership campaign. An elegant members-only reception at Celebrations by Request restaurant will precede the concert.
Tickets for the concert are $15 for preferred balcony seating, $10 for main floor and $5 for seniors and students. They are available at Schnucks, the arts council office at 119 Independence and at Bi State Southern Oil.
James Taylor coming to SIU Arena
Folk-rock legend James Taylor will perform Nov. 22 at the SIU Arena.
Taylor is known for such hits as "Fire and Rain," "Sweet Baby James" and "You've Got a Friend."
Tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday at the SIU Arena south lobby box office, at Ticketmaster outlets and Arena ticket outlets. Tickets can be charged by phone at (618) 453-5341.
Wristbands to determine the order of ticket sales will be distributed at the Arena from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. today only.
Arts in Action in Paducah on Saturday
PADUCAH, Ky. -- Arts in Action, a festival offering the works of and demonstrations by more than 40 studio artists on the grounds of the Museum of the American Quilter's Society, will be held Saturday.
The festival will include free admission to the museum's current exhibits of more than 160 quilts, live music, hayrides and other activities, including a community quilt project for children.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum is located at 215 Jefferson St.
Yeiser Arts Center also will offer free admission today and Saturday.
Violinist Regina Carter at St. Louis club
ST. LOUIS -- Violinist Regina Carter and her quintet will perform tonight and Saturday night at Jazz at the Bistro.
She has recorded with Aretha Franklin, Patty Labelle, Wynton Marsalis, Mary J. Blige and Lauryn Hill and has released six of her own albums.

Cape Central orchestras to perform Tuesday
The Cape Central High School Freshman Orchestra and the Cape Central High School Orchestra will perform at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the commons area of the new high school. Admission is free.
Southeast Baroque Trio concert Tuesday
St. Louis Symphony violinist Lorraine Glass-Harris will join the Southeast Baroque Trio in a performance Tuesday at Old St. Vincent's Church in downtown Cape Girardeau.
Glass-Harris will play Baroque violin in a concert of music by Bach, Telemann, Eccles and Corelli.
Glass-Harris has been a member of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra since 1972 and debuted as a soloist with the orchestra in 1992. She also performs with the ensembles L'Esprit de Musique and Baroque Ensemble 415, both of which she co-founded. She plays a violin made in 1760.
The trio consists of faculty members Paul Thompson of Baroque flute, Dr. Sara Edgerton on Baroque cello and Dr. Gary Miller on harpsichord.
The concert will begin at 8 p.m. Admission is $6 general, $5 for university faculty and staff and $4 for students and seniors.
Rodgers & Hammerstein Revue Oct. 18-19
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- "A Grand Night for Singing" will be presented Oct. 18 and 19 at Shryock Auditorium.
The Marjorie Lawrence Opera Theater and the Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra will collaborate in the Rodgers and Hammerstein Revue.
Selections will include "Shall We Dance?", "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out-a My Hair" and "Kansas City."

Cape native in comedy show during Homecoming
Cape Girardeau native Brese L. Squires will be one of the performers Oct. 18 at a comedy show to be part of the Homecoming celebration at Southeast Missouri State University.
The show will be presented at 7 p.m. in Academic Auditorium. Squires is a hip-hop performer whose stage name is Cool Breeze. He currently resides in St. Louis and has released a CD titled "Cool Breeze."
Comedians also appearing will be Honest John, Bo Peep and Coco Brown.
Squires attended Cape Central High School. He is the son of Valerie Moore and the late Tony Moore.
The show is sponsored by the National Pan-Hellenic Council, What's On Weekends and Student Government.
The comedy show is free for Southeast students, $5 for everyone else.
