Arts council holds First Friday opening reception

From 5 to 8 p.m. today, the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, 32 N. Main St., will hold its First Friday opening reception. This month the arts council is featuring the wood sculpture of Southeast Missouri State University graduate Ron Koehler in the Lorimer Gallery, while the woodcuts of Diego Rios will be on display in Gallery 100. Koehler, a Cape Girardeau native, has taught sculpture at Delta State University for 22 years and his work has been on display all over the country. For more information, call (573) 334-9233.

Jeremiah's brings in touring comedians

Hyena's Comedy Clubs out of Benton, Ill., is bringing touring comedians to Jeremiah's in Cape Girardeau starting Saturday with comedians Paul Frisbie and Jeff McDonald performing at 8 and 10 p.m. New comedians will perform every week at Jeremiah's, at Andrea's in Poplar Bluff, Mo., Club J.D.'s in Sikeston, Mo., and the Blue Fountain Banquet Center in Perryville, Mo. Modelers present airshow of a different sort

Southeast Missouri Modelers Association is holding the Radio Controlled Airshow and Fly-In starting at 9 a.m. Sunday at Cape Girardeau Regional Airport. There will be many different types of model aircraft that will perform demonstrations, and children over 8 can have a free airplane ride aboard the Young Eagle. There will be a visit by the ARCH helicopter and the new DARE car, as well as a a paper airplane contest. For more information, call 334-6230.

River Heritage Quilt Show at Arena Building

The River Heritage Quilt Show takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the A.C. Brase Arena Building. This local show will have more than 100 quilts on display, a vendor's mall, quilt appraisals, exhibits, and a quilt auction. For more information, contact Madeline Gieselman at 335-5049.

Jackson association sponsors art contest

The Jackson Heritage Association is sponsoring an art contest centered around the historic Oliver House at 224 E. Adams St. in Jackson. The contest is open to area students from elementary through high school. All the entries must include an image of the Oliver House from any angle viewed from Adams Street. All media except photography is accepted. Entry forms are available from area art teachers or by writing to the association at P.O. Box 114, Jackson, Mo., 63755. Demonstration, displays at Garden Gallery

Co-op member Regina Smart will be the featured artist on display at the Garden Gallery for the month of October. Her artwork will be on display downstairs from the gallery near the back entrance to Grace Cafe at 835 Broadway. The gallery is also having a wheel-thrown pottery demonstration by gallery co-op members Julie Bricknell, Pam Duncan and Evelyn Beussink from 6 to 9 p.m. today. Orchestra to perform at Show Me Center

The Show Me Center has just announced a Nov. 17 performance by the rock opera-producing group Trans Siberian Orchestra. Tickets go on sale at 9 a.m. Oct. 9 and will be available at the Show Me Center Box Office, Schnucks, P Mac Music and online at www.showmecenter.biz.

Two new quilt exhibits in Paducah museum

The Museum of the American Quilter's Society in Paducah, Ky., has two new exhibits opening Saturday: "Gifts of Love: Quilts by Kathy McNeil," featuring quilts for the holidays and ones that express family relationships, and "Kathy Emmel's Quiltmaking in the Classroom," an exhibition of quilts made by Emmel's elementary school students. Multimedia exhibit at Grace Cafe today

The artwork of New Madrid art teacher Linda Melkersman, Sikeston, Mo., art teacher Terri Matthews and students of both will be on exhibit starting today at the Grace Cafe, 835 Broadway. It will feature a mural, watercolor and photograpy pieces and a multimedia work. Also on display will be photographer Geoff Cardin's "A Contemporary View of the Passion of Christ."

Author reading, booksigning in Cape Girardeau

Alabama-based author Linda Busby Parker will hold a reading and booksigning of her novel "Seven Laurels" at 7 p.m. Thursday at Glenn Auditorium at the corner of N. Henderson and New Madrid streets.
