'Civil War Times' on display on Feb. 14

The sights and sounds of the Civil War in Cape Girardeau will be brought to life during a "Civil War Times," hosted by the Crisp Museum at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus from 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 14. On display will be period fashions, music, storytelling, firearms, a camp display, fort facts, a tea party, Valentine's Day activities and more. The Turner Brigade, the 6th Missouri Company D Confederate Infantry Re-enactors from Dexter, Missouri, will be special guests, along with storyteller Marlene Rivero. The latter, representing Harriet Tubman, will explain the use of signals quilts and songs in communicating safe routes for runaway slaves. In addition, the Southeast Explorer Mobile Museum exhibit "U.S. History," spanning 500 years, will be open to visitors. More information is available by calling 651-2260 or emailing museum@semo.edu

Children's Art Festival scheduled

A reception from 4 to 8 p.m. Feb. 6 will open the 15th annual Children's Arts Festival at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, 32 N. Main St. in Cape Girardeau. Visual artwork and poetry by children from 22 regional schools will be displayed through Feb. 28. The juried art show features the work local art teachers and their pupils are doing in their classrooms. The top eight entries in each age group from grades three through eight will be featured in a booklet distributed at the event. In the student poetry section, participants write poems about a piece of their artwork. One top poem will be selected from each grade level in this category as well.
