Ford Orchestra to perform for inaugural ball

Jerry Ford's 14-piece orchestra will provide music for Gov. Jay Nixon's Inaugural Ball on Tuesday in the Rotunda of Missouri's Capitol in Jefferson City, Mo. This marks the sixth time the Ford Orchestra has performed for the gala. The grand march begins at 7 p.m., with dancing to follow. The event is free and open to the public.

Evening of storytelling to entertain Cape

Donald Davis, who describes himself as "an oral filmmaker," and Dolores Hydock will entertain the public with their storytelling talents at 7 p.m. on Jan. 18 in the Bedell Performance Hall at the River Campus of Southeast Missouri State University. Hydock will share stories about family fireworks, food fads, true love, turnip greens and other peculiarities of everyday life. Two dramatic operas to be performed in one River Campus event

Two dramatic one-act operas, "Dido and Aeneas" and "Suor Angelica," will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 19 and at 3 p.m. Jan. 20 in the Bedell Performance Hall at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus. Both operas will be presented on both nights. Amy Fritsche, of the Department of Theatre and Dance, will assist with choreography, and local artist Craig Thomas will contribute to the production in painting the scenery. Tim Schmidt, of the Department of Music, will conduct the orchestra. Tickets may be purchased weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. by contacting the River Campus Box Office, located in the Cultural Arts Center, 518 S. Fountain St., or by calling 651-2265. Extravaganza benefits theater, dance students

Mingle with the cast of "Annie" and get a sneak peak of this upcoming musical while helping send Southeast Missouri State University senior performing arts students to Broadway at the Department of Theatre and Dance's Extravaganza on Jan. 26 at the River Campus. The Extravaganza begins with a 5 p.m. social, followed by 6 p.m. musical performances, all in the atrium of the River Campus. Funds raised will benefit the Senior Showcase, to be held in the spring. Sponsors of the Extravaganza are Commerce Bank, Saxony Village Retirement Community, Southeast Health and Rhodes 101 Convenience Stores. Theatre and Dance open house planned

The Department of Theatre and Dance at Southeast Missouri State University will hold an open house Monday to welcome back theater and dance students and allow new students to meet faculty and staff. The event is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the Rust Flexible Theatre at Southeast's River Campus. Students will learn about the spring semester's upcoming events and student production auditions. The event is open to all students majoring or minoring in theater and dance, as well as those interested in theater and dance. The open house is sponsored by the Department of Theatre and Dance in conjunction with the Office of Student Transitions. 'Storytellers' concert to benefit Hoffman family

Nashville songwriters will perform in concert at Notre Dame Regional High School at 6 p.m. Jan. 19 to benefit the Joe Hoffman family. "Storytellers Behind the Songs" will feature Aaron Barker, Chris Wallin, Brooke Burrows, Camille Wallin and Ira Dean, who will perform legendary hits they composed for country music greats.

Arts Council hosts regional poetry competition

The Southeast Missouri Arts Council will be hosting the Regional Poetry Out Loud Competition at Port Cape Girardeau at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 19, This competition determines who will compete at the state level as a representative of the Southeast Missouri region. Representatives from six regional schools will participate in the regional competition: Jackson High School, Notre Dame Regional High School, Arcadia Valley High School, Ranch Campus in Lesterville, Mo., Delta High School and New Madrid County Central High School.
