The Green Scene at River City Yacht Club
The Green Scene, a Milwaukee funk/jazz band, will perform tonight at the River City Yacht Club.
The band's sound fuses Steely Dan, Frank Zappa, Beck and Jamiroquai to funky alternative rock.
The Green Scene won the title of best unsigned band in the Jim Beam 2001 Band Search in Denver, Colo. They have appeared at the Whiskey A Go-Go in Los Angeles and at showcases in Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, Portland, Austin and Boston.
The band's CDs include "High," "don't 4 get 2 get down" and "Random Acts."
Music starts at Lead singer/guitarist Ethan Keller also will perform from 5 to 8 p.m. today during a reception for ceramic artists at the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri, 119 Independence St.
Quilts that break from tradition at MAQS
PADUCAH, Ky. -- "Breaking From Tradition: Quilt Explorations with Terrie Hancock Mangat, Arturo Alonzo Sandoval and Zelda Tanebaum," opens Saturday at the Museum of the American Quilter's Society.
The show features art quilts made by three artists who combine unconventional media and techniques with traditional quiltmaking.
Zelda Tanebaum will demonstrate paper embossing at the museum from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The demonstration is free. The exhibit opens at 1 p.m.
The show continues through Feb. 22.
The Cantrells in house concert
The Cantrells, a Nashville duo who performed on the main stage at last year's City of Roses Festival, will play a house concert Thursday in Cape Girardeau.
The duo's repertoire includes folk, bluegrass, traditional western and Irish fiddle tunes. Emily Cantrell is known for her songwriting and voice. Al Cantrell is a former Colorado bluegrass fiddle champion.
They performed in the movie "A River Runs Through It." Banjo virtuoso Bela Fleck and from Riders in the Sky's "Ranger" Doug Green and Fred "Too Slim" LaBour provided backing on their first CD, "Under a Southern Moon."
The concert will be held from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the home of Jean and Larry Underberg. Seating is limited to 40.
The Cantrells are the second in a series of house concerts that began with the Small Potatoes duo last month. The folk duo Danzig and Wooley will play May 29.
All proceeds go to the bands. A donation of $10 is recommended.

JaRule at SIU Arena Feb. 15
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Hip hop singer JaRule will perform Feb. 15 at the SIU Arena.
Tickets go on sale Jan. 18 at SIU Arena outlets and at www.ticketmaster.com. Tickets are $32.50. Tickets for SIU students are $25.50.
The wristband system will be used for the first day of sales at the arena. The distribution will be from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Jan. 17.
The show will begin at 8 p.m.

'Broadway at the Pops' to begin rehearsals
"Broadway at the Pops," a production of the Heartland Pops Orchestra and Chorus, will begin rehearsals Jan. 20.
The show will be performed April 6 at the Jackson High School auditorium. It will include selections from "Les Miserables," "Annie," "Cats," "Evita," "The Secret Garden," "The King and I" and other shows.

Jane Goodall to lecture in St. Louis
ST. LOUIS -- Jane Goodall, the world's leading expert on chimpanzees, will give a lecture and sign books March 6 at Powell Symphony Hall, 718 N. Grand Boulevard.
Since 1960, Goodall has been studying chimpanzees at the Gombe Reserve in Tanzania. Her work is the foundation of current primatological research.
She also narrates and stars in the OMNIMAX film "Jane Goodall's Wild Chimpanzees" showing at the St. Louis Science Center through May 2.
