After sitting vacant for more than a year, the former Rhodes 101 station at 1036 N. Sprigg in Cape Girardeau will soon be the site of a new Dairy Queen.

Ed Radetic, co-owner of King Williams Management, said the company has acquired the property and been granted a franchise for the restaurant.

Architectural plans for the building have been submitted to the city.

The proximity to Southeast Missouri State University and the Show Me Center was the motivation behind selecting the Sprigg Street site, Radetic said.

The new Dairy Queen will be the third restaurant of its kind in Cape Girardeau. King Williams Management also owns Dairy Queen West, located on Kingshighway. A third Dairy Queen on Broadway is under different ownership.

The building will also contain a second restaurant. Radetic said the company is not ready to announce the name of it yet, but it will share dining facilities with Dairy Queen.

PAJCO Inc., Rhodes 101 Stops, has owned the property since 1995. The gas station was closed a year and a half ago after the company opened a new, larger convenience store just up the street at 1126 N. Sprigg, said Rhodes co-owner and chief financial officer Jim Maurer.
