Tennessee bakery opening location at Cape's Town Plaza

After becoming a hit at the Cape Riverfront Market held downtown on Saturdays, Sugar Buzz Bakery is planning to open a permanent location in Town Plaza.

Owner Nicole Huff, a Cape Girardeau native, started Sugar Buzz Bakery in Clarksville, Tenn., two years ago. She is now relocating and bringing her business with her. However, Sugar Buzz Bakery in Clarksville will remain open, Huff said, under the management of her business partner.

In mid-August Sugar Buzz Bakery will open at 47 Plaza Way offering cupcakes, cream horns, cookies, European macaroons, truffles, cake balls and cake pops for sale daily. Custom cakes and cupcakes are Sugar Buzz's specialty.

Cupcake flavors sold at the Cape Riverfront Market include mint chocolate, pina colada, cherry pie, double chocolate fudge, white velvet and lemon tart.

Sugar Buzz will continue to sell its cupcakes at the market until its new store opens, said Huff, who is a U.S. Army veteran. She had been stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky., and stayed in that area after leaving the Army.

* The Southern Illinois Farming Network will sponsor a hands-on, "On-Farm Poultry Processing" field day at Family Friendly Farm in Cape Girardeau from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday.

Family Friendly Farm is a small family farm operated by Matthew and Rachel Fasnacht. The Fasnachts started raising chickens in 2003 and began selling at local farmers markets. As their business expanded, they added eggs and milk. In 2007, they opened an on-farm store. They now sell the farm's products and those of 16 other local producers. At the field day the Fasnachts will guide the participants though chicken processing from catching to freezing.

"The first thing that each participant will do is go out to the field and catch a chicken," Rachel Fasnacht said. "After that, each participant will have the opportunity to work at each station and really get a hands-on experience."

At the field day, participants will learn the basics of humane slaughter, how to "get a good pluck" and the equipment required for safe and sanitary processing.

* The University of Missouri Extension will host the Women in Boots & Blue Jeans video conference from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 20. The interactive television conference held at the Cape Girardeau County Extension office in Jackson will focus on agricultural risk management. The agenda includes timely topics for livestock and grain farmers including estate planning, basic grain marketing, crop and livestock insurances and management and new information about the Non-Insured Crop Disaster Assistance Program. * The Bank of Missouri, with headquarters in Perryville, Mo., recently announced that it has opened a loan and deposit production office in Branson, Mo., the bank's sixth location in the southwest market.
