Matthew Pierce, a December 2001 graduate of Southeast Missouri State University, has earned a perfect score on the Major Field Achievement Test in Business. University officials don't recall ever seeing a perfect score. Pierce, of Patton, Mo., graduated at the top of his class with a 4.0 grade-point average. He received a bachelor of science in business administration, majoring in accounting. Undergraduate business students take the exam during the capstone business course "Business Policies and Strategies." Pierce works at his father's accounting firm, Kenneth W. Pierce CPA in Fredericktown.
Eldon Nattier and James Coley, owners of the Rose Bed Inn Bed and Breakfast in Cape Girardeau, were recently approved as new members of Bed and Breakfast Inns of Missouri, the state's bed and breakfast professional association. The Rose Bed Inn, at 611 S. Sprigg St., received the highest score ever given following an intense inspection.
Debra Johns, staff accountant with Schott & Van de Ven, Certified Public Accountants in Cape Girardeau, attended the Missouri Society of CPAs annual Accounting and Auditing Conference. The conference covered recently issued accounting and auditing pronouncements. Johns is a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University and has been in public accounting since 1982.
Cape Girardeau County Farm Bureau was recognized at Missouri Farm Bureau's 87th annual meeting for outstanding program achievements. President of the bureau, Tom Sachse, accepted the award for the county. The county achieved 2001 membership quota of more than 1,170 members, and 10 gold stars for excellence in several programs. Nearly 1,600 members and agricultural leaders attended the recent annual event.
Dr. Shanon Kirchhoff of Cape Girardeau attended the 2002 MERIT meeting at the State Emergency Management Agency facility in Jefferson City. MERIT is the acronym for Missouri Emergency Response Identification Team. MERIT serves as Missouri's dental forensics team when identification of victims is necessary.
Janet Sanders, the floodplain administrator for the city of Jackson, has successfully passed the Association of State Floodplain Managers Certification Examination, which means she is now a nationally accredited Certified Floodplain Manager. This certification is granted only to those professionals who have met the requirements and completed a comprehensive examination of programs and standards to reduce flood losses in the nation.
Pat Patterson of Pat Patterson Photography in Cape Girardeau attended the 2002 Presidential Circle Symposium in Scottsdale, Ariz. The Presidential Circle is comprised of the nation's most elite professional portrait and wedding photographers, of which only 275 studios nationwide have been inducted as members. The symposium focused on business building programs to enhance the photographic studio's operations, as well as discussions on the latest digital and Internet technologies taking place in the industry today.
Joey Wilcox of Bradley Distributing in Kennett won an all expense paid trip to the Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah from Feb. 20-25 for being the number one route salesman for Budweiser and Anheuser-Busch related products in Missouri.
Representatives of Emerson Motors were on hand recently to present the Kennett plant with the company's annual Operation Excellence for Leadership in Manufacturing Award. Plant manager Ron Randen accepted the award on behalf of the facility and its employees. Emerson Motors, a global leader in the design and manufacture of electrical motors, provides a complete line of general and special purpose electric motors from 1/200 through 4,000 horsepower.
Cheryl A. Morris, CPA and Howard J. Poston, CPA, both with Schott & Van de Ven, Certified Public Accountants in Cape Girardeau, recently completed two continuing education tax courses. The 1040 Tax Tour and the Corporate and Business Tax Tour were sponsored by the Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants. Each class was a comprehensive review and covered updates on tax law changes. Morris and Poston prepare individual, corporate and business tax returns.
Harold Meyr has been issued an individual license by the Missouri State Board of Accountancy to practice as a CPA in the state. Meyr, a Cape Girardeau resident, has been working as a public accountant and as an enrolled agent for the past 25 years.
H. Kay Thurston, an RN at Saint Francis Medical Center, has been appointed to the Missouri State Board of Nursing by Missouri Gov.Bob Holden. Thurston has served in leadership roles as a registered nurse in a variety of rural health settings in Southeast Missouri and most recently in Womancare at Saint Francis Medical Center. The nine gubernatorially appointed members of the board are entrusted with the duty of ensuring that the RNs and LPNs licensed in Missouri create an atmosphere of safe and effective nursing.
