STE. GENEVIEVE -- By late fall Ste. Genevieve County residents will have another new grocery store to shop in.

Tom Friedman confirmed July 27 what the rumor mill has been saying for two years -- he is building an 18,000-square-foot Save-A-Lot store on Highway 32 at Triangle Drive. It will be more than twice as large as the current Save-A-Lot store.

Friedman said the rumors began when he first purchased the property, but they really hit high gear recently when the property was leveled and construction began.

He said Sargent Construction Co. of Fredericktown is the general contractor for the new building -- a metal prefab structure -- which should go up fairly fast, in time for an opening in November.

Friedman has been associated with Save-A-Lot ever since the store opened at its current location on Triangle Drive 23 years ago. He was an employee the first 10 years and purchased the business 13 years ago. When it opened, the Ste. Genevieve Save-A-Lot was the 23rd store in the chain.

Friedman said the new store will have fresh meat and 72 feet of freezer space. It will be larger than the relatively new Save-A-Lot store off Karsch Boulevard in Farmington.

He also said there will be room on the lot for more businesses in addition to the grocery store. He's already heard from people who may want to locate there.
