Peggy Bender, payroll administrator for Robinson Construction Co. in Perryville, received the Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) in October 2003. She is one of approximately 588 practitioners throughout the United States to be certified by the American Payroll Association (APA). The FPC was introduced by the APA in 2000 to better serve all levels of the payroll community. The FPC exam consists of 150 questions that test the candidates in the areas of payroll fundamentals, fundamentals of payroll operations, paycheck fundamentals, tax reporting and payroll accounting, and professional payroll skills and responsibilities. Receipt of the certification demonstrates that the candidate is highly skilled and professionally certified in the area of payroll.
Kevin Govero, Donald Kaverman and Dennis Vollink have been named to the St. Francis Medical Center Board of Directors. Bishop John J. Leibrecht of the Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese has approved each appointment. Govero is owner and president of B.P. Financial Services in Cape Girardeau. He holds a bachelor's degree in education from Southeast Missouri State University. Kaverman is the director of athletics for Southeast Missouri State University. He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration and a master's in physical education from Michigan State University. Vollink is the president of Drury Southwest Inc. in Cape Girardeau. He is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy with a degree in engineering and also served as the state director of recruiting for the academy. Govero, Kaverman and Vollink will each serve a three-year term. Outgoing members of the board are Joe Gambill and Doug Goesbeck.
Bradley Tuschhoff, CPA with Schott & Van de Ven, Certified Public Accountants in Cape Girardeau, completed the "Like Kind Real Estate Exchanges in Missouri" seminar. The seminar covered information on deferred, multiparty, reverse and build-to-suit exchanges. Related issues included exchanges involving partnerships and tenancy in common property as well as calculation of gain, and use of exchanges funds to pay closing costs.
John Marshall, who works at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau, has been given the 2003 Employee Caregiver of the Year Award from the Missouri Association. The award was presented during the association's annual conference in Osage Beach, Mo. The award is given to an employee who has shown commitment to preserve the dignity, well-being and independence of residents. Marshall has worked at the Lutheran Home since 1999. He facilitates three small groups, conducts one-on-one visits and assists residents during mealtime.
Wes Wade of Horizon Screen Printing and Promotional Products in Cape Girardeau has achieved the certification of CAS -- Certified Advertising Specialist. CAS, a designation of the Promotional Products Association International, is earned by completing approximately 70 classroom hours following a structured curriculum, passing a comprehensive examination and actively working in the industry more than three years. The certification reflects a commitment to the industry, to the customer and to personal and professional growth. Only a fraction of those in the industry hold a CAS certification. Wade has been with Horizon Screen Printing and Promotional Products since 1990 and is the sales and marketing manager. Horizon is celebrating 23 years of delivering exceptional service and quality, custom-decorated merchandise.
Jim Mathis of Poplar Bluff has been recognized as Surveyor of the Year at the annual meeting of the Missouri Society of Professional Surveyors (MSPS) held at Springfield. Mathis owns and manages Mathis and Associates a surveying business he started in 1980. The award is presented annually to a surveyor who has given time and effort to the land surveying profession and work within the society.
Bill Schott, a CPA and managing partner of Schott and Van de Ven Certified Public Accountants in Cape Girardeau, has completed a week-long conference on federal tax issues. The National Tax Institute 2003 Conference Program included a federal tax update, information on new developments in the IRS and a section on practical estate planning for closely held business owners. The conference was held in Charleston, S.C.
Executive chef Emily Bashore has recently been appointed to the Regional Culinary Network for Chartwells' High Education Central Region. Bashore joined Chartwells at Southeast Missouri State University as executive chef on Sept. 19, 2002. Bashore completed Master Works I training in Hyde Park, N.Y., in April and Master Works II training in California in June. Bashore's main responsibilities include menu design and food production for retail operations on campus as well as catering events held on and off campus.
Sikeston lawyer Manuel Drumm was honored in October as a "Senior Counselor" of the Missouri Bar. The title is bestowed upon lawyers who have reached the age of 75 or who have been admitted to the Missouri Bar for 50 years. The recognition ceremonies came during the opening luncheon at The Missouri Bar Annual Meeting at the Holiday Inn Executive Center in Columbia. A total of 102 members of the Missouri Bar were presented with the designation at the luncheon.
Michael Grimes of GH Home Furnishings in Charleston was a speaker at the National NARDA Institute of Business Management Oct. 11-14 at the Whispering Woods Conference Center in Memphis.
Grimes spoke on successful small business management. He covered such topics as business organization, sales training and promotion. NARDA, the North American Retailers Dealers Association, was established for independent retailers 60 years ago. It is one of the leading educational and business groups in the United States.
Teresa Bright-Pearson, an assistant prosecuting attorney for Cape Girardeau County, has been selected as a recipient of the Lon O. Hocker Award by the Missouri Bar Foundation. The award is presented each year to three lawyers under age 36 who have demonstrated "unusual proficiency in the art of trial advocacy." The awards were presented Oct. 3 during the 2003 Missouri Bar annual meeting in Columbia, Mo. Bright-Pearson has been an assistant prosecuting attorney in Cape Girardeau County since June 2001. She also has been prosecuting attorney for Mississippi County and an assistant U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri.
Melissa Judd, an employee specialist with Lakes Country Resources Center in Cape Girardeau, has received the PACE-IT Achievement Award in recognition and appreciation for her career accomplishments since graduating from the University of Missouri-Columbia's master's program.
Judd was one of three mentors for PACE-IT, a project in the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Education. Judd assists people with disabilities to find productive employment.
