Horton, a native of St. Louis. Mo., completed her undergraduate work at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She received her medical degree from the University of Chicago School of Medicine, and completed a residency at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics.

She completed a fellowship at the University of Southern California/Children's Hospital in Los Angeles, where she was honored with an Epilepsy Foundation of American Fellowship Award.

Horton served as a assistant professor at the University of Southern California/Children's Hospital in Los Angeles, and at the University of California-San Diego. She practiced in the Los Angeles area.

Horton's primary interests are in pediatric seizures and epilepsy. She studied at the University de Marseille and the Centre St. Paul in Marseille, France, which is recognized as the birthplace of pediatric neurology.
