Nathan Pernia, a graphic designer for the Southeast Missourian, has received a first-place award in the 1993 Missouri Advertising Managers Association's "Best Ad Contest."

Pernia designed a full-page, color advertisement for the opening of Lorimont Place. The ad received a blue-ribbon in the Best Use of Full Color competition at the annual association meeting in Jefferson City.

Irvin Landewee, major-accounts manager for the Missourian, accepted a total of six awards for the Southeast Missourian. They were:

-- First place for Best Use of Full Color, designed by Pernia and sold by Teri Wilson.

-- Second place for Best Special Section, "YELL," initiated by Jon Rust and sold by the advertising staff.

-- Third place for Best Special Section, "Then & Now," initiated by Landewee and sold by advertising staff.

-- Honorable mention for Best Newspaper Promotion, "Good News and Great News Go Back A Long Way," designed by Teresa Hampton Connell and promoting the Missourian.

-- Honorable mention for Best Newspaper Promotion, "Three Words Set Our Special Features Apart From The Rest, `National Award Winners,'" designed by Connell and promoting the newspaper.

-- Honorable mention for Best Use of Full Color, "Main Street Centre, Jackson's Newest Business Complex," designed and sold by Landewee.

Michelle Priest of Jackson has joined Universal Physique Fitness and Racquet Club, 505 S. Mount Auburn Road, as a physical fitness consultant.

Priest, a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University with a bachelor of science degree and double major in food and nutrition and health management, recently completed an internship at Dallas.

She works in corporate wellness programs, including stress management, nutrition analysis and fitness management.

Priest worked at Universal Physique part time while attending college.

Mary Ann McSpadden has joined Ford and Sons Funeral Home-Cape County Memorial Park Cemetery staff as family service counselor for prearranged funerals.

McSpadden, of Cape Girardeau and a native of Poplar Bluff, most recently served as administrative assistant for the Regional Commerce and Growth Association.

LaDonna Viox of Cape Girardeau has joined Homedco, 1749 Independence Square, as staff nurse in charge of infusion services.

Viox is a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University with a nursing degree. She received her trauma nurse specialty in 1991.

She was previously employed at St. Francis Medical Center as an intensive care unit nurse.

Jennie Mae Kuster has been honored as a 50-year member of the American Dietetic Association.

She was among 24 ADA members honored during the 76th annual ADA meeting at Anaheim, Calif.

Kuster, of Cape Girardeau, is a member of Phi Upsilon Omicron honorary home economics sorority and the American School Food Service Association. She has managed food services at the University of Kentucky, Valparaiso, (Ind.) University, and South Bend, Ind., public schools.

She is a graduate of the University of Kentucky with a major in home economics and has a master's degree from Columbia University, New York City, specializing in institutional management.

Roger W. Vessell has joined Columbia Industries Inc. as vice president of marketing.

Vessell oversees product line development, market research, advertising and promotion, and the Team Columbia pro bowling staff.

Vessell, a graduate of the University of Missouri-Rolla, previously worked with Rawlings Sporting Goods Co. in St. Louis as marketing manager of baseball development.

Vessell is a native of Farmington. His wife, the former Joan Sonntag, is formerly of Cape Girardeau.

Dr. Daniel Duick of Cape Girardeau, a board certified endocrinologist, will be guest speaker at a free program on osteoporosis at Perryville.

The program will be held Nov. 17 at Perry County Memorial Hospital's education center.

Duick will discuss detection, prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, a disease that affects a third of all women over the age of 50.

Teresa Pullum of Century 21 Ashland Realty Co., 105 S. Broadview, has completed the 21 Plus Training Course. The course, designed by Century 21, covers all aspects of real estate, including selling, financing, business planning, relocation, career management and more.

Craig J. Muench, formerly of Cape Girardeau, was recently sworn in as a certified public accountant in Kentucky.

Muench, son of John and Martha Muench of Cape Girardeau, passed the CPA examination in May. He was sworn in by Kentucky Assistant Deputy Attorney General Ann Sheadel during the Fall Awards Banquet of the Kentucky Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Muench is a graduate of Murray State University.

David Seabaugh has joined the Missouri auditor's office as an audit assistant in the Jefferson City office.

Seabaugh, of Cape Girardeau, received a bachelor's degree in accounting from Southeast Missouri State University in August 1993. He served an intern at the state auditor's office during the past summer. He is the son of Milford and Dorothy Seabaugh of Cape Girardeau.

Elves Goodman was winner of $100 during the recent 100-year anniversary celebration of Farm and Home Savings at the Cape Girardeau branch. Goodman was winner of the "Birthday Match," which involved determining a birthday closest to the firm's founding date.

Farm and Home was founded Oct. 30, 1893. Goodman's birthday is May 26, 1894.

Kermit Proffer was winner of "The Best Reason to Bank at Farm and Home" contest, Marlene Conner was winner of an apple candy guessing game, and Jay Dahiya was winner of a 100th customer contest.

Other winners during the two-day observance were Gina Peterson, Julie Stout, Howard Suedemeyer, Robert Schneider, David Lefler, Roy McMullin, Sheila Grose, Bobby Harper, Cathy Vanderpool, Barry Hovis and Dave Blanchard.
