Rex Rust, co-president of Rust Communications, was elected president of the Inland Press Association at its 126th annual meeting Oct. 17 in Chicago. Inland Press was founded in 1885 by a group of U.S. and Canadian newspapers seeking solutions to common problems. The association is a not-for-profit corporation owned and controlled by its members, nearly 1,200 newspapers in 50 states of the United States, Canada and Bermuda. The daily and weekly newspapers in the association reach nearly 20 million U.S. homes.
The Southeast Missourian received numerous awards at the 2011 Inland Press Association's annual meeting and awards ceremony Oct. 17. In the competition, the Southeast Missourian competed with other papers with circulation between 10,000 and 25,000 copies. Staff writers Scott Moyers, Melissa Miller, Rebecca Rolwing, Erin Hevern and M.D. Kittle received first place in the Explanatory Reporting category for "Flood of 2011." Staff writers Melissa Miller, Scott Moyers and M.D. Kittle received second place in the Investigative Reporting category for "State pulls $2 million in funding from dental and vision co-op." Staff writer M.D. Kittle received first place in the Personality/Individual Profile Stories category for "A soldier named Lucky: The war at home." The Southeast Missourian received second place in the front-page competition for its flood coverage issues. The newspaper received honorable mention for the Editorial Excellence Award for "County salaries" and other editorials on a variety of local topics. Staff photographer Kristen Eberts received honorable mention in the Sports Photography category for "Winning Run."
Paula Miles of Advance, Mo., recently began a three-year term on the board of directors of Southeast Missouri Food Bank. Miles became familiar with Southeast Missouri Food Bank through her involvement with the Mobile Food Pantry Program. In addition to her work with Southeast Missouri Food Bank, Miles also volunteers for Advance School's PTO, LaCroix United Methodist Church, and Advance Youth League. Founded in 1985, in Sikeston, Mo., formerly known as the Bootheel Food Bank, Southeast Missouri Food Bank provides food to charitable and disaster relief programs in Southeast Missouri. Southeast Missouri Food Bank is affiliated with Feeding America, a national food bank network. More than 150 not-for-profit hunger relief agencies in 16 counties of Southeast Missouri benefit from the Southeast Missouri Food Bank.
Cottonwood Residential Treatment Center recognized Katie Carver as the 2011 Employee of the Year during the annual Employee Relations Day. Carver is an account clerk II and has been with the program since 2004. Her co-workers described her as a respectful, kind professional who goes above and beyond for the children and staff. Cottonwood, on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University, is a Department of Mental Health facility that provides residential treatment to children who have emotional and behavioral problems.
Joyce Hall of Chaffee, Mo., a financial representative with Modern Woodmen Fraternal Financial, has completed Kaplan Financial's Ethics for the Insurance Professional Course. The course outlines the parameters of a life insurance agent's ethical responsibilities and details an agent's responsibilities to insurers, policyowners and the public. Hall began working with Modern Woodmen in June.
