For Sally Suchman, the decision to open a flower shop was a dream long in the making.
"My mother always loved flowers. The shop is named after my mother. She used to decorate for weddings and always had lots of flowers at the house," Suchman says.
She grew up loving flowers, too -- like mother, like daughter. So when she found an opportunity to open "this little bitty shop," as she calls it, she made the career switch and opened Muriel's Garden last June at 202 Independence in downtown Cape Girardeau.
"I sat behind a desk for like 30 years doing accounting work and bookkeeping," Suchman says. "I knew that later in my life I wanted to do something else."
Now, Suchman is known for selling flowers by the stem, and inviting customers to choose their own flowers and a unique vase to go with them.
"I use vintage, antique or unusual vases, like camp coffee pots or oil cans," she says. "I go to estate sales and frequent the local antique shops. Some shops call me when they have something in that I'd like. It's been great. I love downtown Cape and how everybody works together."
Suchman is the owner and sole employee at the shop. She delivers arrangements in Cape Girardeau and Jackson and also does weddings and special events. Her business has grown by word of mouth, she says, and she's developed many regular customers.
"I think I can say I've been a little successful," she says. "I try to take time with everybody that comes in and give them what they want."
She says the best part of her job is working with two of her favorite things: people and flowers.
"It's wonderful; I'm loving it," she says. "I love working with flowers and I love seeing all the different people that come in, and selling flowers is a happy business."
She especially likes visiting with children, and says she likes to give each child a flower to take home when they leave her store.
"I'm just really having a good time with it," Suchman says.
