Business Today: Tell us a little about yourself -- where do you come from, and what brought you to this position at Missouri Delta Medical Center?

Jason Schrumpf: I grew up in St. Louis with very supportive parents and two brothers and a sister. I graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a degree in physical therapy and met my wife Catherine in the process. I finished graduate school at Columbia College in 2004 with a master's in business administration. I have been blessed with two children, Ben and Cate.

I started employment with Missouri Delta Medical Center in May 2006 as director of rehabilitation services, overseeing inpatient and outpatient therapy service lines. I transitioned into the role as director of planning and development in October 2008 and was promoted to vice president of professional services in May 2009 with responsibilities of physician recruitment, planning and development and operational oversight of radiology, laboratory, rehabilitation, pharmacy, physician services and respiratory care. In January 2010, I was selected to succeed Mr. Ancell upon his retirement in December. I was fortunate to have almost an entire year to closely mentor with Mr. Ancell, which allowed for a seamless transition into the administrative role.

BT: Why did you choose a career in health care? What do you enjoy about it?

JS: I entered the physical therapy profession because of my desire to help others and positively impact people's quality of life. I enjoy the interaction with patients and like the fast-paced nature of the field. As a hospital administrator, I experience the same gratification but on a much broader scale. The medical field is exciting and ever-changing with development of new technology, advanced procedures and emerging treatments. Every day presents new challenges and opportunities to make a difference in lives of Missouri Delta employees, patients and all the communities we serve.

BT: It's been a tough time for the economy in the past few years. What's first on your to-do list as president of MDMC?

JS: I need to reassess the health care needs of the communities we serve and strategize on ways we can meet those needs in challenging economic times.

BT: What are your long-term goals for the medical center?

JS: My long-term goals for the medical center are as follows:

-To improve the health and well-being of the communities we serve through better prevention, diagnosis, treatment and outcomes

-To foster wellness for our community through education, support and cooperation with other health care organizations

-To continuously assess the needs of our community and provide appropriate services for our changing health care environment

-To promote collaborative relationships with other providers to facilitate a continuum of care with shared services

BT: How do you spend your time outside of work?

JS: Outside of work, I am a member of the Lions Club and serve on boards at the YMCA and St. Francis Xavier School. I enjoy playing sports, reading, traveling and spending time with family and friends.
