Conferences

* Chick-fil-A Leadercast, formerly called the Maximum Impact Leadercast, a one-day business development and leadership conference, will be broadcast live from Atlanta to hundreds of sites throughout the nation. Locally, St. Andrew Lutheran Church at 804 N. Cape Rock Drive will host the event. The live simulcast will begin at 8 a.m. and conclude at 3:30 p.m. Friday. Speakers will include Jack Welch, former chairman and CEO of General Electric; Andy Stanley, author and leadership communicator; Mike Krzyzewski, head men's basketball coach for Duke University and Team USA; John Maxwell, author and leadership expert; Dr. Henry Cloud, author and leadership consultant; Lt. Cmdr. Rorke Denver, Navy SEAL and star of the 2012 movie "Act of Valor;" Sanya Richards-Ross, gold medalist in track and field at the 2012 London Olympics; David Allen, author and productivity expert; and Condoleezza Rice, former U.S. Secretary of State. St. Andrew senior pastor Paul Short said the church tries to be a leadership center for Cape Girardeau. "We love to welcome the community into our church," he said. Some speakers will have a faith-related message, Short said, but the focus is on leadership issues, challenges and "ways to move forward in life today." * The United Way of Southeast Missouri and Communication Across Barriers is holding a prosperity summit from 8 to 11 a.m. May 16 at Drury Lodge, 104 Vantage Drive. The summit asks the question, "What would our community look like if everyone prospered and developed to their fullest potential?" Dr. Donna Beegle of Communication Across Barriers, who transcended a history of multigenerational poverty, will speak about how to reduce poverty and build positive change for struggling individuals in the community. Beegle also will speak at the United Way annual meeting, which will follow from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. RSVP for either event by Friday. Each costs $10. * Merci, a children's clothing, baby items, home décor and gift boutique, will open Wednesday in the restored Julius Vasterling Building, 637 Broadway. Owner Cathy Pincksten has traveled the country to find unique inventory not available elsewhere locally, and local artists have aided her in the décor and design of the store. A ribbon-cutting will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. Regular business hours will be from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

* Dr. Charles Moon, dermatologist and owner of Advanced Dermatology of Southeast Missouri in Cape Girardeau, is holding a grand opening from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 17 at 465 S. Mount Auburn Road for Shine Medical Aesthetics, the first local medically owned skin care clinic. Shine will offer "innovative cosmetic products, aesthetician services and cosmetic procedures including: facials, medical strength chemical peels, microdermabrasion, laser hair removal, various laser treatments for anti-aging, Botox, fillers and more," according to a news release.

Business events to benefit the military

* The 2013 Hiring Our Heroes job fair will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 29 at the Osage Centre, 1625 North Kingshighway. The event is a program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation and will include a hiring fair and an employment workshop for veterans and military spouses that will focus on resume writing, tips for successfully navigating hiring fairs, military skill translation and interviewing. * Crain Funeral Home locations throughout Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois have been designated as official drop-off sites for the not-for-profit organization Cell Phones for Soldiers. Phones collected at nearly 1,000 Veterans and Family Memorial Care providers nationwide will be sold and the proceeds used to purchase prepaid calling cards for U.S. troops overseas. Cell Phones for Soldiers was founded by teenagers Robbie and Brittany Bergquist of Norwell, Mass., with $21 of their own money. The organization has raised almost $2 million in donations and distributed more than 500,000 prepaid calling cards to soldiers. Crain Funeral Homes also has been selected as exclusive Preferred Benefit Providers for the Veterans Cremation Society and Christian Cremation Society.
