Nearly 55 percent of workers are exchanging potentially offensive messages at least once a month.

Online industry analysts predict that Internet misuse will cost companies an estimated $1 billion in lost productivity in 2002.

In a recent survey, 60 percent of the firms polled said they had disciplined employees for online misuse and 30 percent had fired people for such behavior, which included downloading pornography and shopping and gambling online.

Nearly half of employees send up to five personal e-mails a day and more than 30 percent receive 20 personal e-mails a day.

52 percent of the Fortune 100 companies have an Internet- use policy.
